Prince George, B.C. - The City of Prince George could soon be the legal owner of the burned out Columbus Hotel.

The City was declared the purchaser of the property on September 24th of last year because of back taxes owing. The owner of the property owes nearly $37 thousand dollars in back taxes. If the amount is not paid by September 24th, then the property will be transferred to the City.
At the last council meeting there had been a recommendation on the agenda to extend that period for one year, but the item was removed from the agenda just as the Council meeting got under way.
Meantime, the owner of the Columbus Hotel has requested City Council reconsider the order that calls for him to immediately remove the remaining portions of the hotel. An engineer has deemed the remains of the structure unsafe and said the removal was a matter of urgency. The City’s order gave the owner 7 days to remove the three standing walls and the debris.
