Prince George, B.C. - People gathered at Community Foundation Park today to mark the 28th annual Terry Fox Run, and that included “Vicki” who only wants to be identified by her first name. She says she's tried to do the Terry Fox Run every year since it began because Cancer has had a major effect on her family.

“My whole family has been affected by Cancer,” she says. “Terry Fox is a year older than me and I just think it's awesome what he's done.” Vicki says she tries to prepare all year long. “I run a couple of miles and then a few months before, I tried to run 3 miles—and that's almost 5 kilometers.”

Event coordinator Liza Arnold says their goal is to meet or exceed last year's participant total. “Approximately 700 and our donations totaled just over $18,000 last year so we'd love to see that same number last year.”

She says the run has always been a diverse one. “The Terry Fox Run, Terry wanted the run to be one that anybody could participate in no matter what their interests were, what their socioeconomic status was,” says Arnold.

The run saw local politicians as well, including Cariboo-Prince George MP Dick Harris as well as Deputy Premier and Prince George-Mount Robson MLA Shirley Bond and her family. “Cancer research is essential, and when you think about it, he started to raise $22 (m) million and he's raised over $400 (m) million inspiring people and that's why my family is here,” says Bond.

She says everyone has been touched by Cancer, “we see the UNBC Timberwolves Men's Basketball team here, we see Seniors, we see walkers like me—that just tells us this is a Canadian Hero we want to honour.”

The run kicked off just after 10 o'clock this morning and goes until 2pm today and participants can either walk a portion of the 5 kilometers or run the entire way.
