Quesnel, B.C.- Provincial and community partners are celbrating the official opening of the $1.4-million Seasons House at 146 Carson Avenue.  It is a mix of 10 transitional housing units and 10 emergency shelter beds for individuals facing homelessness.

The Quesnel Shelter and Support Society is managing the development as well as administering select support services, including daily meetings with case managers and referrals to other community support programs.

“We are committed to fostering independence and success for people who are socially marginalized, by providing shelter and supports to our community’s most vulnerable,” said Jennifer Boudreau, president of Quesnel Shelter and Support Society. “Through our partnership with the Province, we are helping to break the cycle of homelessness one person at a time.”

The two-storey building includes 10 single rooms each with a private four-piece bath and five single-room double-occupancy emergency shelter units each with a four-piece bath.

The building was renovated to improve energy efficiency. Renovations included:

  • installing individual room controls for heaters;
  • replacing the commercial kitchen hood;
  • upgrading all light fixtures with energy efficient light bulbs; and
  • installing energy efficient appliances.
Residents participate in daily support meetings with a case manager who assesses their needs and determines additional support requirements.

Support services at Seasons House include advocacy and referrals to outside support services. Seasons House also provides referral programs to community members who do not reside at the development.

The Province is providing annual funding in the amount of $641,000 for the 10 emergency shelter beds under the Emergency Shelter Program.

Maybe our new mayor and council can "outsource" our homeless to Quesnel. Just a thought.
