Prince George, B.C.- Site preparation has begun at the Prince George Regional Correctional Centre for the construction of a women’s unit.

There was supposed to be an official announcement at the site today  with Solicitor General Jon van Dongen, but the fog at the  Prince George Airport  meant van Dongen's flight was cancelled, and the  Solicitor General  had to  post pone the official event.

The women’s unit will have 20 cells with a capacity to hold 24 inmates. It will also provide more space to offer programs for the women.

Once complete, the $11.3 million dollar unit will free up 18 single cells for male inmates.

There are 250 women in custody across the province of B.C. In Prince George, there are usually about 20 women in custody.

Wow. At a cost of $11.3M, that's about $470K per inmate.

At least there's one industry around here in growth mode.
Rope is cheaper
Just like a men's prison. Extra dough fer pink paint and curtains?
If the construction cost of the mens jail was any indication, the womens jail should jump from $11.3 miliion to close to $20 million when it is done.
are you kidding me??? $11.3 million to house up to 24 miss fits!! Log cabins in the North West Territories, a thousand miles from anywhere, will be just fine, thank you very much!! It will be so cheap. Don't need walls or fences, if they want to run, let them, they will never make it out to society!!

Either way, they won't make it to society, but we should take the least expensive route!!

I am so tired of this waste of tax dollars!! I say it again, TAX REVOLT!!!As lostfaith said, have you not had enough??? Our governments are out of control. The rich are getting richer, because of our stupidity!! Bring them down to their knee's!!! It is time!!

They should build a big square brick building with bars to divide rooms, and foamies on the floor, and a couple bathrooms. The law breakers deserve nothing more. I am being generous with the foamies by the way.
A few years ago there was a general strike in Poland. I think it was called solidarity. It was very successful in showing their Govt exactly where the bear did it's thing in the woods.

We definitely need some type of Canada wide revolution.
Could we outsource our prisoners to Mexican jails? Might cut down on recidivism for one thing. Send their families lawyers John Birchers and social workers too. If they care to go with the cons.
