Prince George, B.C.- The Premier says the province is looking for some way to get the Highway 37 electrification project under way.

Speaking on the Meisner program yesterday, the Premier says the province is still working on the electrification project “We share your enthusiasm for it, it is unprecedented to have a quarter of a billion dollars sitting on the table waiting for the partnerships to come together. You should know and everyone there should know we are working on creating the first step of the partnership so more and more partners can join us in British Columbia as we can build the economic strength in the northwest.” ( at right, map, courtesy the Northwest powerline Coalition shows proposed power line)
The Premier says the public will not cover the whole cost, “The investments we make will be made to generate additional economic activity in the future.” He says there are great opportunities in the northwest, and the province is working on partnerships similar to what had been developed in the oil and gas industry.
The Province had agreed to split the cost of the electrification of Highway 37 with the developers of the Galore Creek mine. Then Galore Creek was put on hold, and the electrification project has been sitting on the shelf since.
The Northwest Powerline Coalition has been pushing the Province to move forward on the project on the matters of First Nations consultation or other action which would send a strong signal that the Province is committed to the project. The Coalition argues that without some real action, mining companies aren’t likely to get a loan from the bank to support their part of a partnership.
