Saturday night, the Lions host Saskatchewan...

So many questions....so few answers

There’s a story circulating ‘bout a seven yr. old boy from Burnaby who challenged a court ruling over who should be his legal custodians.

The boy had a history of being beaten repeatedly by both parents so the court awarded custody to his grandparents.

As the story goes the boy said his grandparents were worse culprits than the judge’s first choice.

In an unprecedented ruling the judge dramatically allowed the boy to make his own choice, to which he said he wanted to live with the BC Lions, as it was his firm belief they were incapable of beating any one.

A bit unfair I thought as the Leos do have a win in their past six games.

This is a team steeped in talent, that at this juncture look to be hell bent on self destruction.

Against the Esks Saturday night the Leos showed a dreadful lack of discipline at key points in the game (two touchdowns called back and field position killers), failure to finish serious marches in with the major score, and an inability to stop the opposition game ending drives, as was also the case in Montreal.

The win now gives the Eskimos a legitimate shot at a first place finish should BC be faced with an unfavorable series of events this week end.

If in fact the Leos do drop their game against the Roughriders Saturday and the Eskimos beat Calgary, than by squandering the bye BC would find themselves faced with not only having to win a semi-final but than driving up the road to Edmonton to face the Eskimos, this time on a frozen Commonwealth Stadium field before a frenzied hostile crowd

A lot of ifs but by extension than, if coach Buono is unable at this late juncture to successfully address his team’s game surrendering shortcomings, all other forms of razzle dazzle and tinkering will prove to be no more than putting lipstick on a pig, and the forgoing analogy becomes an all too real possibility.

What a tangled web we weave.

Edmonton place kicker Sean Fleming, who earlier in the season went full circle from benched goat to wonder-boy, has the Esks looking now like world beaters.....pretty heady stuff for a team that has scored only two touchdowns in their past two games.
Everyone wearing green and gold give Sean a big hug!

The Calgary Stampeders on the other hand have been quietly hanging around and are now also in the hunt, having positioned themselves for second should they win over the Esks in their annual “hate on” at McMahon Stadium next Sunday.

A win by the Stamps would translate into the Lions finishing first, win or lose against the Roughriders at home.

Now the game at hand.

The loss last Saturday by the Renegades to the Als put Saskatchewan into a semi final playoff against the Montreal Alouettes on Nov. 13th as the cross over east division third seed, and the Roughriders didn’t have to as much as snap the ball to benefit from the Ottawa demise.

The winner of that game will face the Toronto Argonauts in the division final on Nov. 20th.

One would think there has to be a pre-occupation at best back home for these Roughriders over the arrest and allegations this past week of aggravated assault leveled at DB Travis Smith.

How’s the rider moral/state of mind over this distraction?

Adding to this steaming pot of bouillabaisse is of course the Roughrider’s impending playoff game/games to be staged now in the East.

Saskatchewan have nothing more to lose at this juncture in the season, save a mean nothing game against BC where one wouldn’t think they’d be prepared to see an impact player go down.

On the other hand the Lions are playing to clinch first overall along with a much needed momentum builder to take them into the post season.

BC very much needs to win this game!!

Following the playoff match-ups, the two survivors from each division will clash on Judgement day Nov. 27th at BC Place Stadium, at which time “someone will be fired”.

If one can take anything out of this CFL season, it’s knowing “it aint over ‘til it’s over”.

Saturday night, game time, 7p.m. TSN
