Prince George, B.C.- Today marked the successful completion and official opening of the Bobtail Forest Service Road overpass. The $5.2-million project, designed to improve traffic safety and support economic diversification, was completed ahead of time and on budget, says Forests and Range Minister Pat Bell.

"I had two main reasons for supporting this project: first, safety and second, the economy" said Bell. "This overpass will dramatically improve the safety of our truck drivers and the travelling public. It also can be a bridge to future developments, in particular, bioenergy
opportunities in the region."

The overpass is on Highway 16 near Bednesti Lake, about 50 kilometres west of Prince George. The Bobtail Forest Service road provides an off-highway haul route to Canfor's Isle Pierre sawmill. With an estimated 600,000 to 700,000 cubic metres of wood being hauled along the Bobtail each year, road user groups identified the crossing as a significant safety concern.

Open just in time to call a spring election asking for another four year mandate to ensure corporate profit at all cost in British Columbia.
So nice of the them to build a overpass just for Canfor. The intersection and a pass lane could have been made that would have benefited others and not just Canfor
I would think not being killed in a collision with a log truck would be beneficial to anyone. Or am I missing something?
Death to Socialism, I think you are missing something. Our provincial government could have made Canfor haul legal sized loads across hiway 16 as in any intersection throughout the province. Hauling legal sized loads would have increased Canfors log delivery cost to the Isle Pierre operation. In order for Canfor to continue off hi-way hauling from the Bobtail our provincial government subsidized Canfor to the tune of one multi-million dollar overpass. Our provincial government had four options, 1st, they could have stayed the status quo [overhieght, overlength, overwidth, overweight] no doubt unsafe. 2nd, province could have forced Canfor to haul legal hi-way loads across hi-way16. 3rd, provincial government build a multi-million dollar overpass. 4th, Canfor could build the overpass at the corporations expense. It is a government subsidy [corporate welfare] because we built it in order for a corporation to benefit financially. If it was all about safety there are alot of intersections in the province that legal hi-way log trucks cross. I find it quite funny that a guy whose handle is "Death to Socialism" is in support of corporate welfare.
Sadly miss informed some people are! The overpass was built to accomodate more BC Timber Sales wood going to canfor and was payed for by BC Timber Sales. The main reason being to prevent increased logging truck traffic crossing the higway. The logging trucks cant stop safely in the winter on the bednesti side due to a long hill with a blind corner at the bottom with the higway crossing right there!! BC Timber Sales in this case would probably be the primary road permit holder due to the increased volume from their tenures going to isle peire. Its amazing what you can find out by asking questions rather then going on assumptions!
"If it was all about safety there are alot of intersections in the province that legal hi-way log trucks cross."

True, but are they at the same rate of accidents as that particular crossing?
The approach could have been fixed to accomodate the truck traffic haveing to stop on a slight uphill on the approach to the hi-way. At I am sure a lot less than the multi-millions for this subsidy. As for BCTS who do you think this is, does it make a difference whether we take government money from this account or that account it is still public money. As for safety on this stretch of road it is on a straight stretch of hi-way with the bednesti hill at least 2 km west, hardly unusual on any hi-way. The real reason is so oversized loads can continue to haul to Isle Pierre.
Mrs. Palin built that famous road to nowhere. Now we have an overpass to nothing. Great.
A waste of tax payers dollars. The money could have been better spent building passing lanes or four laning between Pr Geo and Vanderhoof.
