Prince George, B.C.- The small group of community stakeholders that travelled to Portland, Oregon this week is coming home with some good lessons in developing sustainable solutions to homelessness.

The delegation also learned the City of Prince George is moving in the right direction and has made significant progress in implementing important initiatives to end homelessness.

“The opportunity to see first-hand the way Portland has battled the challenge of housing the homeless was invaluable,” said Mayor Colin Kinsley, who participated in the delegation, along with a multi-sectoral group of community stakeholders including the Prince George Native Friendship Centre, An Association Advocating for Women and Children (a member agency of Community Partners Addressing Homelessness), BC Housing, Northern Health (Mental Health and Addictions), the City of Prince George, the RCMP, Downtown Prince George, and the Ministry of Housing and Social Development.

In 2005, the City of Portland began implementing a comprehensive community development plan that emphasizes collaboration and cooperation amongst key stakeholders such as the Portland Police Bureau, the Portland Bureau of Housing and Community Development, the Portland Business Alliance, and a range of community service providers.

The Prince George delegation was in Portland to investigate how a similar housing strategy might be applied within the context of the City of Prince George’s Integrated Community Sustainability Plan.

Delegates  visited  several agencies involved in Portland's housing strategy, and learned that while solutions are expensive in the short term,  they are effective in enabling people to exit homelessness, thereby  reducing costs in the long term.

Thats just lovely. And we had to go to Portland to get all this info. I have a question about homelessness. Is it not a provincial government resopability? But I guess the Mare has travel in his blood.

Cheers
Well, that sounds all well & good, but I don't see any proof. I would like to read about what they learnt, this is all "hot air" and I would like to know how this statement is true "The delegation also learned the City of Prince George is moving in the right direction and has made significant progress in implementing important initiatives to end homelessness." They certainly aren't unintelligent enough to say "oh, that trip was a waste of time - we learnt nothing" OR "Wow, sorry tax payer, that was a waste of money". I wish they would stop insulting our intellience with this BS.

Once again, why are we meddling with what is a provincial jurisdiction ? Why are we spending our local tax dollars on this ? Our Three Amigo's ( Bell, Bond and Rustad ) should be dealing with this.

The city should be worried about roads and such.

How much more can the province drop down on the local people and yet tax the heck out of us !
May I suggest that the Province should offer to pick up the entire tab for this expedition, if it hasn't already done so.

The money saved can be applied to fix some cracked and potholed streets here. I am certain that the delegation did not forget to ask the city of Portland how it deals with pavement deterioration issues.

Perhaps some pictures were taken of Portland's pothole repair equipment?

One can still dream and hope...

That kind of media release could have been written before the trip. It says nothing.

Expensive to implement but in the end it will save dollars. Any reasonable person could have figured that out without travelling.

Work together with all eagencies involved. And that is a revelation? If it is, then the wrong people were hired for those positions.

The last flight on Horizon Air!! What else can I say - one does not need to go to Portland to see how to deal with this problem - asked the locals and they will tell the group how to fix it.
What a waste of taxpayers's money!!!
Why is it always somebody elses problem? Aren't we all responsible? This is our city and this is our problem. I am sick and tired of waiting for "SOMEBODY ELSE"
Why is it always somebody elses problem? Aren't we all responsible? This is our city and this is our problem. I am sick and tired of waiting for "SOMEBODY ELSE" to fix our problems. What's wrong with us stepping up to the plate and dealing with it.

Ideas and solutions are a dime a dozen. The problem is that we spend more time and money on study's and reasearch and never get down to actually doing something about the problem. The best ideas in the world are useless unless they are implemented. Let's get going!
Did Portland spend $8 million bucks to house 30 homeless (or at risk people)? Enquiring minds wanna know.
