Prince George, B.C.- The City of Prince George is making some suggestions for the “next steps” for the downtown .

Following a  rally which was held under the banner of  “Let’s Get Started”, City Manager Derek Bates proposes there be a special task force.

He calls for a special task force to be set up involving Downtown Prince George and Initiatives Prince George that would:

  • recommend stakeholder participants for the task force;
  • develop a recommended process and structure to create a vision and essential partnerships for the Downtown, which
  • recognize the Smart Growth on the Ground and Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) projects currently underway;
  • create a recommended implementation model to advance initiatives, projects and programs that are in alignment with the vision for the Downtown;
  • identify the roles and responsibilities of community partnerships in achieving the desired outcomes and associated timelines; and the resources required for them to be successful.

City Manager Derek Bates says the timing is right “The development of the City’s ICSP is underway and we are presented with a timely opportunity to capture the downtown interests in the context of the broadest community and regional interests, and develop both a process and structure to move action plans forward.”

Huh? That was gibberish to me...it didn't really say much at all...that was disappointing...
What it says is, gee I wish City Hall wasn't downtown. Heehee!
blah blah blah
More useless reporting and rhetoric. Another task force! Hooray!
What are they going to do about the drug dealers and the pawn shops that line 3rd avenue. Plans Plans and more plans but no action.

Cheers
"...and develop both a process and structure to move action plans forward.”

Yes, please do that! Another task force, another creation of vision partnerships, another creation of an implementation model, another identification of roles and resources...it's called job security.

If the ancient Egyptians had *worked* like this they would today still be leveling the ground for the foundation of Cheop's Great Pyramid.
Hey city planners:
1. Reinstate the awnings
2. move the soup kitchens out of the downtown
3. Spread out the pawn shops across town
4. Actually enforce loitering law in the downtown (pick on those that are obvious, not fair dressed citizens that shop)
5. Allow business owners to reside above their business if they wish
6. NO PAY PARKING ON THE STREET
7. Enforce the bylaw for adequate parking for all businesses
8. Reduce municipal business taxes for the downtown.
9. quit messing with things that works and fix the stuff that is not working!
10. Quit trying to increase business density into the same area so customers can park close enough to frequent the business of choice.
11. Encourage big box downtown and quit spreading out the city at the detriment of the downtown core

Have city counselors make a good show of regularly "shopping" for their personal needs DOWNTOWN! Lead by example, not law or regulation.
I hope they have a time frame otherwise it will just go on and on with meetings. A wise old owl once told me that no meeting should last longer than an hour and that doesn't include lunches!
Plan all you want...I can tell you in two seconds that you're wasting your time trying to "revitalize" downtown.
Without growth (Which isn't happening in PG currently) and demand for space (which isn't needed) downtown will not change one bit.

The old fashioned concept of a
"downtown community core" needs a critical mass to be successful and PG simply can't achieve it with it's current population and economy.

Blame box stores and decentralization but they are the new reality and they're not going to change so we have to.
Can't or don't want to do the job you were hired for? Form a commitee! Too overwhelmed by a situation that could have been minimized but through lack of vision & leadership has gotten out of control?
Mobilize a task force!!
Have the business owners & the general
population not made it clear enough to City Hall of their concerns about downtown?
Yet another pass the buck solution, what a waste of tax dollars.
I thought they would have recommended napalm and a D9 Cat.
RE LOKI

1. They will just get smashed so no point

2. Ya lets move the soup kitchen up to the hart when all the people there have no mode of transportation to get up there SMART

3. There is pawn shops spread all acoss town already. Leave your house for one and get off opinion250 you would see that.

4.There is no law that says someone cant stand outside in a public place, Lets come remove you for lurking around this website to ofen, again made no sense.

5.That wont do no good either. People breaking into stores and stuff wouldnt care if people were livin there, Houses get broken into all the time.

6.90% of the meters are knocked down already so that might happen soon.

7. I agree

8. I agree

9. I agree rebuild the columbus hotel it was a heritage landmark, RIP JJ
Send out a questionnaires and ask a lot of people why they don't shop or come downtown. Summarize the consensus and act on it. Too simple? It's all I can suggest for now.
rebuild the Columbus!!! Oh that's a good idea - NOT! One dive gone is GOOD for PG. I don't care how "nice" the people who worked there were, I'm sure they were...but bottom line...it was a drug haven...I've been there enough times to know so unless it changed since the early 90's (which I highly doubt) it's a dive.
Translation:

City of PG appointing Downtown PG and IPG to:

1. Appoint people to a committee;

2. Direct the new committee members to meet regularly;

3. To realize Smart Growth on the Ground and ICPS exists;

4. To show up at a council meeting with recommendations so the city doesn't have to do this. New ideas welcome.

5. Tell us who does what already and what they need from the city to enable #3 and #4.

City Hall is so busy doing other stuff with ICPS right now...but we're here...sort of
This election should be about more than trying to rebuild the Downtown and Homelessness.
