Pawn Shop Second Hand Dealer By-Law Discussed

City Council is looking at a draft by-law that would set some new rules for second hand dealers and pawn shop owners.
At the core, is the need for a new computer system that can help police track items.
RCMP Superintendant Dahl Chambers told Council the computer system would allow electronic tracking so an item that may have been stolen in Prince George and entered on the system here would be "tracked" if it shows up at a pawn shop in some other part of the province.
The draft by-law is a mirror of programs already adopted in Kelowna and Vancouver. Kelowna has already been able to recover more than a $100,000 worth of stolen property.
There would still need to be extensive consultation with all stakeholders to ensure the by-law is serving the community in the best way possible. Council has approved both the draft by-law and the consultation process.
