Quesnel, B.C.- The Council for Quesnel has authorized spending approximately $61,000 to design a full-scale dewatering program for the West Quesnel Land Stability study area. (at right, a photo taken in May of 2007 of a crack that had developed in one of the schools in West Quesnel, the crack a result of the land shift) Monitoring costs for 2008 are well below budget, which left a surplus of $85,522 in the West Quesnel Land Stability account. This surplus will be used to design the next phase of the program. The trial dewatering program ran in the spring of 2008. It showed that groundwater levels and pressures decreased in areas where dewatering efforts were made and provided a good direction for the next phase. While the provincial government is still reviewing those results, the City will advise the Ministry of the proposed action and seek endorsement of the plan. The City of Quesnel has invested more than $1 million towards finding a lasting solution to the West Quesnel Land Stability issue. The provincial government has provided close to $1.2 million.
