Economic Diversification Needs to Build on Core Strengths

Prince George, B.C.- When it comes to economic diversification, communities are better off building on a core strength than trying to bring in something different. That’s the advice from Dr. Roger Gibbins  the  President of the Canada West Foundation.  (Dr. Gibbins, in photo at right, photo Opinion250 staff)
The Foundation is a policy think tank that looks at issues in a Western Canada context.
Born in Prince George, Dr. Gibbins has a strong understanding of the economic issues facing this community. “One of the problems we have had since time immemorial is that we’ve relied on our resources base and that has made our economy highly volatile.” He says when government’s try to reshape the economy into things the market can’t support they are doomed to failure. “What works is economic diversification that is built around the natural strengths of the provincial and regional economies, diversification that is built around that core of the economy.”  He says those moves can be seen for instance in Saskatchewan where the mining of uranium has a natural lead into the development of radio isotopes for medical diagnosis.
Prince George has a strategic location, but more needs to be done to take advantage of it says Gibbins.  He says there has to be a commitment to infrastructure , that other countries would think it absurd that there are still sections of our “trans Canada highway” that are  only two lanes.  He says we talk of corridors, but we don’t walk the walk,  “Lets look at this, the City of Calgary has just spent $200 million dollars on an overpass. That’s one overpass in one city. The Federal Government’s commitment to the Asia Pacific Gateway initiative is $800 million. Do you think China is saying, I will spend the equivalent of 4 overpasses and that will link me to the world? At some point we have to shake our heads and look seriously at how we connect to global markets”
He says while we can expect global markets for forestry to continue to face challenges for at least another year, he has confidence things will get better “The Global economy is going to rebound and its going to be increasingly competitive and the communities and the countries that survive in that environment will be those who figure out how to move forward.”

Sounds like a smart man to me.
Agreed!
If toll highways are the only way to get proper 4 lane highways then lets do it. The Coquihalla worked fine and 22 years later she is paid off and free. Why not. Twin Kamloops to Prince George and then Prince George to Alberta and that changes everything.
Born in BC...I would agree with you if there was an easy alternative route to Kamloops or the Lower Rainland. People in the Okanagan and the Loops did not have to pay a toll in order to get to Vanc.
This sounds like a sensible idea that would mean that the City will ignore it and come up with some hair brained idea of their own.

Cheers
Time to start thinking outside the box like Dr. Gibbins is suggesting. We have many reasons for people to visit our part of the province. Lumber being only one part. Anybody think of anything else? Amazing winters. Snowmobiling, skiing, skating, snowshoeing. We have a winter wonderland that many people in the world would consider an Outward Bound Adventure. We live in it every day. Hunting, fishing, outdoor adventure are really in our back yards. People travel across the world to experience the lifestyle we take for granted. Let's face it, we live in a pretty amazing part of the world.
How many new jobs will be created AFTER the overpass in Calgary is built?

When is the good Doctor going to figure out that "our transcanada highway" is not THE transcanada highway?

When is he going to figure out that there are still significant portions of THE transcanada highway that are not twinned; that there are far too many on grade crossings of the highway; and that the highway is not controlled by the feds, but by the provinces.
The meaning of "diversification" is variety. This bonehead doesn't even know what he's talking about. Yay lets keep banging our heads against the wall! Just because Calgary got ripped off and spent 10x more than they should have on an overpass doesn't mean everybody else should follow suit. And this city desperately needs to get away from anything that has anything to do forestry as forestry is a sinking ship. Just another "expert" shooting off his mouth.
Who paid this expert for his opinion and how much?
I dont know what it take for people to realize that Prince George is not important to anyone outside of Prince George. Most people in BC have never been here, and will never come here. Most people who have left (and there have been thousands) will never come back.

Prince George is a good place to get a job, and raise a family, however it would not be anyones first choice.

With the exeption of Highway 16 West where people come to Prince George to shop etc; most of our highways ie; 97 North 16 East and 97 South are sorely under utilized. There is no real need to twin these highways other than political, because there are very few people who use them.

There is nothing new going on in the Prince George area, and as far as I know nothing new on the books for the forseable future. We have experienced negative, or no growth for the past 10/15 years and it certainly looks the same for the future.

At this point it appears there is nothing to diversify to, so get used to the idea.
