Candidates for the Mayor's office and for Council,  prepare to answer questions from the floor.

Prince George, B.C.- Just under 500 people attended the Civic Election forum held at the Civic Center on Wednesday night.

The event was a presentation of CFIS- Opinion250-and Shaw cable.

There were no knock out punches delivered by any of the candidates as the candidates focused on the Performing Arts center and how they would like to see the facility built.

Other issues raised included what the new council will do to improve the labour market in the region and what can be done to enhance down town.

The proposed dangerous goods route got mentioned several times, most of those seeking office suggested that the federal and provincial governments should be called upon to contribute to the Arts center. Cottonwood Island Park got mention, homelessness again was brought to the floor by those seeking office as they stated their ideas to change the downtown character and ways to provide housing to the homeless. The matter of agencies providing crack pipes received widespread criticism from the audience,  along with civic debt, and the 4% special tax levy to repair roads in the city.

The expansion of the DBIA also was talked about, as was what the future should be for the down town of Prince George.

The forum will be re broadcast on Shaw cable channel 10 over the next week.

"...focused on the Performing Arts center and how they would like to see the facility built..."

Good grief!

Not much of a cross section of the general public in this election. Stacked house.

Yes, Yama, I don't think this write up was an accurate reflection of the content, however, the questions were not that interesting and many of the questions went to the wrong people (at least for me).
Having said that, it was a great turn out, and Eugene Fetterly had the best line of the night!

Yet another stacked scenario, but fun!

How is it that it seems that the few seem to get the most. If the performing arts center is such a great project why is it that we should ask the municipal government for funds. Why dont they just raise their own money and build it.

To read the info in the Free Press one would believe there are thousands of performances in a year but actualy how many people will attened and pay the price of a ticket. And then we want the taxpayer to pay for the maintenance. There is a lot of info we are given that are just dreams.

To me its dont eat that Elmer its hores***t.

Cheers
If any of you think you can do a better job than what these people are trying to do, then why aren't you up there spending your time, money and energy trying to make things better? Do you every see the positive in anything?
The easiest thing (in any situation) is to be critical, complain, find fault. So in comparison.....kudos to all the people who at least "try" to be proactive & effect positive change.
Any dam fool can go out and ask the tax payers to foot there dream projects. There is nothing positive about a 50 million dollar project when the City has a debt of close to 200 million bucks.

And to call them hard working people is the biggest strech of truth there is . Most of these artsy clowns have neverm done a hard days work in their lives but live off the HARD work of others. Shame on you.

Cheers
Bridge,
First of all, I hope you are enrolled in a good evening class to tidy up your grammar and spelling.
Have you read the bios of most of the people running for office???
Most of them have jobs and have spent countless hours volunteering for all sorts of groups and committees.
"Live off the HARD work of others"???

Get a life.
downtownmerchant.

I took most of my high school at evening classes and I aint going back. Besides its a lot more productive to us ones brian for valid ideas then to have to concentrate on gramer.

I havent read the bios on all those hard working people tht are runing for civic office since those are not the hard working people that I talk about. The topic was about the performing arts centre.

Maybe you can spell but you sure as hell cant read.

Cheers

I agree with Bridge when it comes to people asking taxpayers to fund big projects, and then expect us to beleive that this gives them some level of intelligence. Weve all heard this song before, what we dont hear is how effective are these projects.

The Civic Centre is empty most of the time.

The Cougers do not seem to be able to attract any fans and the number is falling as we speak. Some games below 3000

The Sports Centre at the Unversity is a disaster insofar as membership goes, and will be a big drain on UNBC and on the City.

The new Cameron St. Bridge has taken over three years to complete and will probably not be finished until next fall which brings it into 4 years and only God knows how much it will cost in the end.

The new Police station will cost in excess of 25 million dollars and will be the third new Police station in 50 years.

The PAC will cost between 42 and 50 million and will be a huge cost on taxpayers and will be under utilized.

The list goes on. It is pretty obvious that the City and Councillors are out of control when it comes to spending.

Those people who are seeking the position of Mayor and Council should be talking about.

(a) Reducing debt
(b) Reducing taxes
(c) Reducing the number of people on the City payroll, and have a hard look at the cost of our Fire and Police Departments.
(d) Stop anymore Capital Projects like the Police Station, the PAC, the Co-Generation Project, and any other hairy fairy ;projects that may be proposed.

We need a Council that can direct our money to areas that will be the most beneficial to all Citizens, and we need to get value for our dollars.

We have proven beyond a doubt that a weak Council and a strong minded Mayor is a recipe for fiscal disaster. We need some self reliant, forward thinking, fiscally responsible people on Council.

Whats the chances of that happening????

IAM, OK, so I had a look at the link, just what dod Eugene have to say? I couldn't find anything on the link.
Palopu, we should then get rid of the old and bring in the new......that is going to be our only chance to make a change to the way things have been done over the past few terms of several of these people sitting on council. Get out and vote and take as many people as you can with you............it's now or never.
That Eugene......... he may not win but he sure is fun.... and he actually may have a chance. I think it's time we have new fresh faces in city hall and he has my vote
