Prince George -    Police are asking the motoring public to stay off the roads after the first heavy snowfall of the season falling on warm roads has turned the roads and highways into the region into an icy mess.

"If you don’t have snow tires on, stay off the roads",  that it is comment from Gary Goodwin RCMP spokesman, who says police cars that are equipped with snow tires are having major problems getting around.

Peden hill is being singled out as one of the more serious spots in the city, but Goodwin says anywhere in the city that you have to go up an incline spells trouble.

The snow is expected to turn to rain making the roads in the region even more difficult to travel on.

WELCOME TO PRINCE GEORGE!
We had our two weeks of summer after the long delayed and cool spring followed by the weak fall.
As I have been told, in PG there are really only two seasons: Sh!tty and not so sh!tty
"The simple word if you don’t need to go anywhere , don’t"

That suggestion wasn't meant for the people that should be sending the plows and sand trucks out there.

Oh ya they go out after all hell breaks loose.
Ok people - I was just out there, all over town and even travelled up peden hill. Peden hill is in rough shape, but it is obvious long before you get there that it's going to be bad. People are driving like idiots. I dont' care how big your 4 wheel drive is, it does absolutely NOTHING for you when it comes time to stop! The sand trucks are out there, I saw them. Give them half a chance to get around - they can't be everywhere at once. Same thing every year, first snowfall, people drive like morons and blame the city. Slow down and drive accordingly.
Yeah, the morons are still on the roads. Really the conditions (in the city) are not all that bad......if you have winter tires and drive appropriate for the conditions. On a trip downtown an hour ago, the biggest problem I encountered were the turds that attempt to pull out in front of moving traffic, apparently not realizing that the white stuff ain't traction compound. Good businesses to be in must be: tires, front end repairs, and collision repairs. Oh, and tow trucks. No shortage of stupid people on the roads, so the fuzz is right; just stay off the road.
metalman.
There should be a law that says winter tires are required and tickets given to people driving with three-season ones.
Where are those global warming/climate change ninnies now?
"There should be a law that says winter tires are required"

Actually that is generally the law in Quebec now. They have to be on between Dec 15th and Mar 15th.
The thick fog, black ice with snow on it, and people that can't drive is just another day on the job... but it would be nice if YRB would do their job too.

Thursday night YRB didn't have a truck (sander or plow) on the highway west of town till after 7pm when all the cars were already in the ditch. Thats at least 4-hours after the snow event first started. Its service standards like that that get people killed IMO. Typically you see the plows as soon as you reach the Bednesti district line where the roads are clear and sanded. Maybe we need crew sharing so the YRB Vanderhoof crews can clear the roads for the YRB PG side? Or maybe it should just go to being a government administered service with private individual contractors contracted for guaranteed plow/sanding services before the season starts. This idea that it is acceptable service because it is the first snow fall is not in the best interest of the tax payer or industry.

The cost to highway towns and mills when the highways closes is substantial. When they have to curtail production or close the cost is in the tens of thousands of dollars and yet they are the ones paying the taxes to have the service delivered effectively... thus YRB isn't holding up its end of the bargain and the government is the one responsible IMO.
