Prince George -     Highways throughout the region remain in icy,  winter driving conditions after snow fell on a wide spread section of the central and coastal areas of the province today.

From Terrace east on highway 16, snow covers the roads in many parts of the making for slippery driving. Highway 97 both north and south of Prince George report icy driving conditions, with vehicles going in the ditch. Snow  and ice on the roads is also being reported to north of Cache Creek and also in the Okanagan.

As the fresh snow is falling on roads that are warm, icy conditions have been the result and there are numerous reports of accidents across the entire region.

Police say if you are going to travel today, either have good winter tires, or pass until road conditions improve.

Oh my goodness there are trucks spunout all over Peden Hill with this first real snowfall of the season.

I'm not positive but doesn't this exact same situation arise every year on every first snowfall of the season?

Are these winter "hotspots" not in need of special attention during these snow events.

If special attention was paid to these "hotspots".............

THE FRIKKEN ROAD WOULD STILL BE OPEN.
What year are these people that are in charge of our snowploying/sanding programs going to get a clue?

Simply amazing.
I know, lets build a performing arts center.

How about taxing us more for road repairs then not actually doing road repairs.

Wait a minute thats already happening.
"Whole Central Region Of Province Have Bad Roads"

Thats because all our tax dollars get spent in the lower mainland.
Ok people - I was just out there, all over town and even travelled up peden hill. Peden hill is in rough shape, but it is obvious long before you get there that it's going to be bad. I would think professional drivers would know this and chain up before they end up stuck half way. People are driving like idiots. I dont' care how big your 4 wheel drive is, it does absolutely NOTHING for you when it comes time to stop! The sand trucks are out there, I saw them. Give them half a chance to get around - they can't be everywhere at once. Same thing every year, first snowfall, people drive like morons and blame the city. Slow down and drive accordingly.
Hey lost faith, Have you actually been outside. I'm on the road right now and have seen lots of action. For the amount of posts you have posted you likely havent had the time to go out and see that there are sanders and plows out there. It only started 2 hours ago. How fast do you expect them to sand the roads. Better get out there with your shovel and wheelbarrow full of sand.

Actually city roads are the responsibility of the City of PG which I guarantee sends none of its local tax revenue to the big bad lower mainland.
Hey Vocer if you learned reading comprehension in elementary school you would understand what I have written.

What part of taking care of the "hotspots" didn't you understand Vocer?

You see if these spots were taken care of as the snow was falling they wouldn't be a problem.

It's a well known fact Peden hill doesn't get the attention it needs to prevent these trucks from spinning out the first snowfall we get. Simply no excuse for it.

Wouldn't expect you to understand that though Vocer.

You've seen lots of action have you?
Sure you have..... after all hell has broken loose.

After everyone is spun out Vocer it doesn't matter what you see out there.

Do you get it now Vocer or would you like to go back to elementary for some more reading comprehension.

Vocer read carefully.

Hey your right there BC.
Actually I already knew that.
I also never said anything to the contrary.

"Whole Central Region Of Province Have Bad Roads"

The above doesn't say the streets in the city of PG does it?

Thanks for pointing that out though, many people like Vocer and eagleone probably appreciate it. ;)

Born in BC, Peden hill is a provincial highway and is maintained by provincial tax dollars that are now being spent on dream projects around the big apple. So your off the mark.

And your right the City can not send tax dollars to the lower mainland cause they dont have enough tax dollars to go around for THEIR dream projects. So it really dosent matter how you look at it we as tax payers are just loosers.

Oh and by the way has the City not spent a lot of money on a project whereby on a snowfall forecast they can sprey the streets with a new magic solution that will deice the pavement on frost or a snowfall. It would be pointless to use a whell barrow and sand as the City has it all under control. Just ask them.

Cheers
ouch!!! but then I expect it from you!!

Again how fast can it be done, those tractors spun out in the first 10 minutes after the snow fell. Your post reads like they should have been sitting on the hill since yesterday anticipating it. I could understand your rant if nothing had been done at all but they were there shortly after, I was there, I saw them. Dont need an elementary school education to "see" that I'm aware of. In you defence though peden Hill is NOT the city of PG's issue as Hyw 97 is a provincial highway. Its YRB territory. See, I do know something for an elementary student
someone beat me to it re: the highway
And I did forget to mention I have sat in the house all day and dont have to go out and fight the snow or to see what the roads are like. Just click on Highways cam and see the roads around the proivince.

Cheers
You the wise one Bridgey. Let the carnage diminish before venturing forth. Smart.
metalman.
I think we should have road clearing crews stationed at the bottom of Peden Hill from Oct 15th to Nov 15th on 24/7 standby just waiting for that first snowfall. It would ensure that the thousands of people who have run into this every year since we have had a Peden Hill would not be caught off guard.

Other than brides and weddings and the first snowfall of the year, I can't think of another event that causes otherwise sane people to turn into lunatics in a matter of minutes. Geez people, we live in Canada. We get winter. It snows and freezes. My advice? Buy good tires and drive to the conditions you are facing on the road. It's amazing how good cars and trucks can get around when you do that, LOL :)

Lets get this straight Vocer, you're telling us you are driving around posting stuff on the internet while in control of a motor vehicle?

Why doesn't that surprise me.

Vocer, it is very obvious you are not the outdoorsy type that understands how the plowing and sanding operations in our part of the country works. I on the other hand have been involved with that exact type of thing for the past 30 years.

Anytime you would like to learn things about the subject just ask.

Yes the plow and sand trucks should have been standing by Peden hill because it's a fact when they don't this is what history has taught us will happen. Every year it is exactly the same thing.

In the plowing and sanding business ten minutes is a long time.
Ten minutes gives the sand trucks lots of time to take care of business.
Just came in from Burns Lake 4 1/2 hours. three to four inches of snow in the middle, freezing rain and compact snow and one plow truck was all I saw.

I think if someone gets killed or severly injured, YRB like should be held for negligence for failing to be prepared for the snow fall, its not as if they do not have access to the Weather network.

Yup... and drinking a coffee and talking on my cell.

I was parked and on a laptop if you must know which is "outdoors"

I still dont' understand why the big trucks don't chain up BEFORE they get to the hill. It was obvious to everyone long before you even get to peden hill that it was going to be an issue, so why bother trying? Roads were not quite so bad at the end of the day, but people were still driving like idiots. Saw 3 vehicles blast through the red light on Hwy 16 and Domano.
In defense of YRB...they have the same staffing issues that most companies are struggling with nowadays. Not enough workers (in this case Drivers) to go around. I'm not absolving them of their responsibility but they can't be everywhere.

As for truckers chaining up. Yep...they should have done it. However there really isn't a good spot for drivers to stop on the side of the highway at the bottom of the hill. Most hills IMO should have a safe area for drivers to pull off for chaining up purposes.
