Ft Nelson Mayor Seeks Help From Competition Bureau For Gas Prices

Ft Nelson - The Mayor of Ft Nelson has written the Competition Law Officer of the Competition Bureau asking for an investigation into the gas prices in that community.
Mayor Chris Morey asks that the Competition Bureau bring competition in gasoline pricing back to Fort Nelson pointing out that her community has had the highest gasoline prices in Canada on a constant basis.
She says towns and cities north of Ft. Nelson, such as Yellowknife (12 hours north) and Whitehorse (12 hours North ) as well as towns and cities immediately south of Fort Nelson all have cheaper gas prices.
Mayor Morey says, “We are not talking about a few pennies, a significant difference in prices”.
The mayor says of the five retail stations in the community, three of the locations are controlled by the parent company. The manager of one of the outlets, Husky is told that he cannot be the first to lower his prices; another station is told that two other stations must lower their prices before he can.
Morey says "While the rest of Canada has enjoyed lowering prices, we have not."
This is a serious competition issue she says but in addition it is an issue of fairness.
Mayor Morey "We are clearly being targeted as a community where gasoline retailers can get away with a higher price than anywhere else in Canada." She says there is no reason for it , as it costs less than $.0.05 per litre to truck gasoline from Ft St John to Fort Nelson. The same truck passes through Ft Nelson going to Whitehorse and the price in that community is $0.15 cents a litre less.
