Prince George -   No damage estimate is available in a fire at Prince George Sawmill on Landooz Road Sunday night. Crews from two fire halls were called out to battle a blaze in a wood chip hopper at the mill at 8.30pm.

Fire crews arrived at the scene to find flames shooting out of the top of two very large wood chip hoppers, each about 20 meters tall and four meters wide. The bins were glowing red from the heat.

Using a ladder truck,  fire crews were able to penetrate the main body of the fire inside the hopper.

Putting out the fire took several hours with the crews remaining on the scene for just under five hours.

There were no injuries during the fire; an overheated bearing is believed to be the likely cause of the fire.

Could that have been an OVERHEATED bearaing?
metalman.
I wonder if thats PG Saw whole log chip plant, or was it the Saw mill itself? Two different sets of bins, actually three if you include the planner? Both the saw mill and the chip plant should have been shut down for the holiday for weekend shift and should have had the bins left empty with the belts turned off? It will be interesting to find out more.
I wonder if it was caused by the friction of the money falling out of it so fast ?
With the industry so beleagered, I would expect that the mills are not spending the money on infrastructure (maintenence) like they used to. Thus an old bearing causes a fire.
