Finally, I get To Interview The Mayor

By Ben Meisner

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 03:45 AM

Two "firsts" occurred over the past three days.

1.Dan Rogers was elected as the new Mayor of Prince George and

2. on Monday morning he showed up to be interviewed on my show.

What’s so significant about that you ask?  Well, over the past six years I have not interviewed the Mayor of the City, Colin Kinsley.

I was accused of being negative, a label which Don Zurowski tagged me with when it came to city business. The last time that I got into a discussion with Mayor Kinsley it took place at  the Initiatives P.G.office. That happened to be one week before the civic election of 2005 in which Kinsley squeaked out a victory over Rogers. In that discussion I suggested that the announcement was nothing more than an election gimmick to get Colin elected. He got a little hot suggesting that I should not be there asking questions because I was a commenter not a reporter.

Well here it is, three years later and 12 excuses later in which Ives Ghiai  has not started ,”Metropolis”.

The excuse this time is that he can’t get any contractors, Gee, he must not have been reading the news to see where construction is at in this region.

I also raised the matter of the Cameron St Bridge which had four options and as Rogers pointed out in an interview early this week, he had suggested that we use the old pilings one year before the last election. That option three, to do just that, never saw the light of day until well after the fact when Opinion250 broke the news after being prodded by you the readers that something was amiss.

So it is now 3 years later and the bridge isn’t finished yet. It is strange how politics work, it is my belief in the  end the voters sniffed that one out and who knows, interviewing the Mayor of Prince George could become a regular thing again.

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

You ARE extremely negative and are far from a reporter. Contrary to your opinion your opinion does not count as news and last time I checked getting and printing both sides of the story mattered to journalism integrity. Must be an easy job for you when you aren't bothered by the need to stick to the journalistic code.

If I was Mayor I wouldn't grant you interviews either.

You are nothing more than a sideshow. Come see Ben find the negative in everything ..come see!!
Ben you are a welcome voice in the wilderness. A person who can see the other side of the story. There is always a downside to any given action. And to the previous post I have heard Ben say gee I"m wrong but the past mayor did not have that in his vocubulary. A welcome side show keep it up.
I fully agree. At least Ben has never been stymied by a thing called "political correctness" when asking questions of those people (politicians) who were hired by us taxpayers.

They old saying goes: If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

Obviously some people couldn't and stayed away rather then face some closer scrutiny.

Keep it up, Ben!
It's obvious that "realitycheck" (1st comment)is not a "fan" of Mr. Meisner's approach to things. (understatement of the century) So here's a REALITY CHECK for "realitycheck"...... Why then are you always on this site, commenting??? Is it because...now wait for it..... you're intention is to be NEGATIVE ?????? What a hypocrite..........
Ben is the Lou Dobbs of PG, or you could say Lou Dobbs is the Ben Meisner of America. I have no problem with that kind of reporting as long as they take self criticism well and listen objectively to reason... which it appears to me that Ben does do.

So I think its a good public service in education people about civic issues and the only people that want to keep things dark have something to hide and should not be making public decisions with tax payer consequences.

I think Dan has nothing to hide, so he will have no problem being accessible to inquiring minds.
Last night the Mare told us at his last council meeting that the Cities finances are in "good shape". That may be thinking positive but is it a fact or just more fiction?

Last year the city debt stood at $160,000,000.00 That figure has now changed to $120,000,000.000. I think its called "imagnative accounting". The cup is half full.

Cheers
Reality Check, you can get all the biased, slanted reporting you want by reading the Citizen. At least Ben is not afraid to call a spade a spade. Kingsley apparently couldn't stand pointed questions and critisism so he avoided Ben. Nuff said. Keep up the questions Ben. Somebody has to have the gonads to ask them.
Ben I have said it here before.

If it wasn't for people like you out there asking the tough questions, there would be no one to keep these people in line that like to think they can do what ever they want to and get away with it.

The anti Ben club are simply those people that don't like it when you ask the tough questions that uncovers their incompetence.

There are far too many people running things in this world that think they can do what they like when elected or hired into a position of authority.

Thanks for trying to keeps these morons in check Ben.
Hmmmmm,,,,,people who run for and get elected to council automatically become morons.....Where is the elixir?

Nict cut lostfaith, but I prefer realitys nic name

Sideshow Ben

ta ta till next election
Hilarious on several levels. Oh to feel so self-important.
Runner46 you are one of those ASSumers that read things into peoples posts that are not there.
Where did you read (in your delerium) where I said such a thing?

Just say no to drugs!
Last I checked this site was called "opinion 250". I would expect to see OPINIONS expressed here, not necessarily "journalistic code" or even "both sides of the story". It's Ben's site. He can say what he wants, it's his opinion, and it provides an outlet for the rest of us to express ours, whether we agree with his or not. If you find it negative, go elsewhere. I find it informative, most of the time, because Ben isn't afraid to dig deep for the real story and ask the tough questions.
And under "opinion 250" it's says "your news" I agree with reality check. More often then not it's opinions printed here disguised as news. A good example was the stories leading up to the last federal election.
Actually RUEZ, it ALSO says "YOUR VIEWS"
In fact...the complete line is:
YOUR NEWS, YOUR VIEWS, NOW
Aren't personal "views" and "opinions" the same thing????????? duh

Anyone who regards this site as anything more than entertainment is seriously fooling themselves. But hey Ben does not care why you are here reading as long as you are here clicking away and that he can translate into revenue from advertisers. That is how it is. And it is good entertainment as far as I am concerned, much better than watching Beverly Hills 90210 with my wife.
As far as interviewing Colin, you obviously did not know the rule. Free drinks for the mayor and he would be all ears.
Yes your views would refer to the comments we are allowed to post. Nothing wrong with that. What's wrong is when opinion becomes confused with news. This is a good site, but it has it's bias.
Put me down as a supporter of Ben, Elaine, and their web site.
The City Fathers, Business Groups, Chamber of Commerce, DBA, Politicians, and the Local Paper all feed off of and live on hype.

Some of the BS you get in the local paper is beyond beleive, and the sad part of it is, is that most people beleive it.

If (Heaven forbid) someone disagrees with the local yokals and their understanding of what the situation is, they are branded as negative.

The local paper restricts letters to the Editor to one letter every 3 weeks, so if you really wanted to take issue with some story, you would have to take out a paid advertisement to get your view across. At least with 250 you can send in your view on a continuing basis, and be subjected to acceptance or rejection immediately, as has just happened above. Futhermore if the local paper wants to it can just not print your letter.

This site allows for different points of view which is good for all concerned. A lot of the information to regular news papers is **planted** under the gueise of **News Releases** . These releases always push the point of view of those who plant them, thats why you never see headlines as follows:

CAMERON STREET BRIDGE IS A HUGE COST TO TAXPAYERS, WITH NO END IN SIGHT.

CO-GENERATION PLANT DOWNTOWN COULD HAVE SERIOUS EFFECTS ON MILLER ADDITION RESIDENCE'S HEALTH.

CITY AND PROVINCE WASTE HUGE DOLLARS ON PIPING HOT WATER TO NECHAKO RIVER.

CITY DISREGARDS CONCERNS OF MILLER ADDITION TAXPAYERS AND BUILDS LOW INCOME HOUSING AT 17 AND QUEENSWAY.

CITY CONTINUES TO DISREGARD TAXPAYERS CONCERNS ABOUT THE BAD CONDITION OF ROADS.

CITIZENS OF PRINCE GEORGE WAIT WITH BATED BREATH, WATCHING THE SKY FOR THE ARRIVAL OF THE FIRST WIDEBODY CARGO JET TO LAND AT PG AIRPORT.

HORIZEN AIR POCKETS $150,000.00 AND LEAVES TOWN.

TWO YEARS AFTER IT WAS BUILT THE TERMINAL EXPANSION AT PG AIRPORT (CUSTOMS) STILL NOT BEING UTILIZED .

CITY CONTINUES TO RAISE TAXES AND SPEND MONEY, NEVER COMMENTS ON THE COST OF RUNNING CITY. ARE WE BROKE???

I have been enjoying Ben and his "points of view" for many years. I'm thankful we have him. I do not agree with everything he has to say, but that's the beauty of it. A good water cooler discussion can be so invigorating, don't you agree? Ben has brought up a goodly amount of important and controversial issues and stirred up a few hornets nests in his time. He has also made people a lot less apathetic and a little more involved when it comes to our little one horse town. He's helped solve a lot of problems over the years. He's been a voice for many people and love him or not Prince George has been very lucky to have him.

I'm Junco and that's my opinion.
When I first read realitycheck I just said "whoa" and disappeared. I needed to come up for air.
Now, after the shock,I can sort out my own feelings.
I think, what Ben does for me is to bring up issues. This site has been the first and only forum that I know of where we can actually get into conversation with one another. If it gets too rude, or negative, I just sit back and recover and then want to jump in again. It is good for our little one horse town and that is what we are with lots of wonderful things happening like the University and hopefully an Arts Centre. If opposing sides can just have conversations without being rude it is actually good for our town, in my opinion.
Cheers
I am Lamb
P.S. Opinion 250 is much more than a "side show", the number of hidden people who read it would astonish you. Be nice if they jumped in too but then perhaps it is more advantageous to all for them to be circumspect. Opinion 250 would be a worthwhile research project for UNBC for how communities come together.
The only thing I see this site lacking is, the ability to post our own topics/stories and to beable to carry on debating/discussing topics of our choice.

If you want carry on with something you must wait until Fridays.

We need a 24/7 free for all.

Lamb, there are a whole bunch of internet forums where one can get into conversation with one another.
Many that allow you to post your own questions etc.
Let's hope Dan does what he said, and puts the performing art centre to a referendum. We do not need this waste of our dollars, up to $60,000,000.00 once the land is purchased and everything else is finalized. To waste that kind of money for 1% of the population is just plain stupid.
