Prince George, B.C. – It is expected there will be a decision by the end of this year on who will be the owner and service providers for the new Gateway Seniors complex in Prince George.
Northern Health had issued a request for proposals to find an independent partner who would buy and operate the facility.  The  request for proposals  closed last week. There were 8 proposals submitted from five different groups.

The submissions  include outlines for purchase of the facility and lease back to Northern Health, and just leasing the facility while another partner would provide the care support services.

The $42 million dollar facility is expected to be complete by the summer of 2009.

The facility  will provide  94 new residential care beds  and 50 assisted living units on the site.

Any one have any thoughts on "private" care services vs. government care services?
Private care with proper government oversight SHOULD be the best case scenario. Government care with government oversight doesn't seem to be too spectacular. Only time will tell...
Seen many nightmare scenario's when private is looking after things.

You all know what profits do to corporations.
The submissions include outlines for purchase of the facility and lease back to Northern Health,

This scenario is typicl of how things are done today. Use the taxpayers money to set up an enterprise for someone else to make a profit. Even if it were done and alocal firm were to make the profit that would probably be spent in the community. The Chateau is a prime example operated by Americans to take the profits.

We will always be hewers of wood and carriers of water.

The bottom line is that we need these types of facilities as the population ages.

Government has nowhere near the amount of people needed to run all of these kinds of facilities, so you have to look to private operators to take up the slack. This is not the end of the world, unlike some would have you believe.

If you're going to let a private company look after the facility, just make sure it's has proper government oversight and is audited frequently.
Government has nowhere near the amount of people needed to run all of these kinds of facilities,

Then were will the private operator get,all the people from to operate the facility?

Northern Health already has staff that would be able to run the facility and look after staffing.

Audits appear not to be carried out in existing privately operated facilities. Only after the fact when the media become involved and make an issue of the poor quality of service are audits done.

Our population never stops aging so why dosent the private operator use their money to build it and they will come.

Cheers
"Our population never stops aging so why dosent the private operator use their money to build it..."

Uh, because they're not in the business of building the facilities. A private/public partnership is the only way you're going to see something like this happen. Maybe in your perfect world the government would run everything, but that's just not the reality.

This is the way things are and will continue to be as long the Liberals run this province. We will use tax payers money to build business and then auction it off to private business. I bet if you are to look at the bid proposals all involved contribute to the liberal party. After all what good is being the King if you can't take care of your friends.
agreed with the king comment. If they sell it lets hope we get the money spent on the project back.
