Construction is underway on family-centered maternity, newborn, and paediatric facilities at Prince George Regional Hospital to provide high-level care for women and children.

The renovation will create:
- A new maternity area complete with 14 private single rooms for all stages of childbirth/recovery, reduced separation       between a mother and newborn, and better education on care for newborns;
- An expanded Special Care Nursery area that meets new Canadian standards for space and equipment and  includes more room for parents;
-New paediatric rooms
-  Expanded paediatric ambulatory care facilities; and
- Dedicated isolation rooms for infectious patients.

Funding  contributions for the $12 million dollar expansion project are as follows:

· Fraser Fort George Regional Hospital District: $4.8 million;
· Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation: $2 million; and
· Northern Health: the balance of the project costs ($5.2 million) through capital funds provided by the Government of B.C.

"Expanding and renovating the maternity, new born and paediatric wards of PGRH will help our littlest British Columbians stay closer to their parents and homes," said Deputy Premier Shirley Bond.

It is hoped the  project will be complete in about a year from now.

Seems to me that only last week I was reading the headlines in the newspaper how the birth rates in PG have declined from 1,500 to 1,000 births per year since 1999.

My question was how many abortions were performed during this same period and has their been an increas or decrease?

Seems a little ironic, doesn't it? Chester
Is there anything that Shirley doesn't know these days? She must have almost two years of post secondary education by now and she knows way more than most teachers. It's so reassuring to have her in such an important position. She will be hand picking judges to the supreme court soon as well as heading a round table for surgeons.
