Opinion250  has invited Ning Ma, a Chinese student studying English at UNBC, to  write a weekly  article for  us.   We thought this would be helpful  to Ning as he strives to  improve his English skills, and  helpful to us  as we can see how others view Prince George, B.C. and Canada.    Consider this an educational opportunity for  all involved, and that is why we won't be inviting comment on this weekly submission. We are interested in  your thoughts on things Ning should  experience  and write about.    We are also  providing  the same article in Mandarin as an opportunity for Ning's family and friends to learn more about us.

Ning spotted a deer on one of his walks on University Hill this past fall

I love Prince George as it sits harmoniously with its surroundings. Every morning when I see fresh green on the hills around the city I know I am not far from nature and this makes me feel happy. Every night when I see the lamplights of the city like stars, I feel the grandeur of the city. As a newcomer, I can not help missing my hometown, but I still like the beauty of Prince George very much.

Prince George has a lot of things different from my hometown. When I first arrived here the first thing which impressed me was its beauty and cleanliness. In Prince George most families have private gardens where Canadians plant trees flowers and grass. In the city there are also a lot of beautiful parks. On the outskirt of the city are trees, hills and the Fraser and Nechako Rivers. All of these show that Prince George is a beautiful place for people to live. However, the most exciting thing for me is that the animals and people can live harmoniously. Many times I saw many deer eating and walking in the forest around houses. In China I can only find animals in the zoo. In my hometown people do not care about environmental protection, but are beginning to. After the industrialization in the 1990s there was a dramatic increase in pollution. Although the government enacted laws to protect the environment, some Chinese people don’t pay attention to the environment and threw garbage in public areas. I think in China, people should learn from Canadians how to make systematic laws to force people to protect the national beauty。

Second,I found the differences about the equipment for people with disabilities. I found all of public buildings have electrically operated gates and some special access ways for wheelchairs while in China that is not the case. I think China should make a law and invest more to improve the living conditions for people with disabilities so they can be part of the society.

At last, I felt the most obvious dissimilarity between Canada and china is in the residential style. In China, most people live in apartments because China has too many people, but in Canada people live in houses because there is a lot of space. Most Chinese do not have their own gardens and garages, but many Canadians do. The two styles have advantages and disadvantages. People who live in houses are more comfortable than people who live in apartments but they will take more room to build their house. Prince George is spread over a larger area than it needs so people can enjoy extra space. Recently there was a heavy snow in Prince George and the city did not have enough snow removers to clean the snow and ice. If the city was smaller the problem would be solved easier because if people lived closer together, there would be fewer roads to keep clean and it will cost less money. As well, the city can have more money to build the downtown and to help the economy grow.

Prince George has many things different with my hometown, I love the nature and the peaceful city and I want to live here for along time.
