The CIty of Surrey is  going to follow the lead of Prince George.

The City of Surrey is proposing to make the Royal Canadian Legion in that city tax exempt beginning in 2006. Surrey Council is being asked to forgive the property and school taxes the Legion currently pays.

Here at home,  the City of Prince George  has  been giving  the Legion a break  for some time.  The Legion on 7th Ave (Branch 43)received a property tax break of $16,295 dollars in 2005 and the practice will continue.

Some cities in the province do not give the Legions any sort of tax break.

The City of Surrey approved the exemptions of Surreys Royal Canadian Legions from property taxations on Oct. 4th. They have 4 branches of the Cdn Legion so this would be a significant tax break. I addition in Sept. they approved allowing vehicles displaying veteran license plates to park for free until the end of 2005. Im not sure if they are following our lead or if we are following their lead.

This tax exemption in Prince George should trickle down to the Elks who located in the Legion a couple of years ago as a cost saving measure. The tax exemption might get them cheaper rent from the Legion.
Interesting that no candidates took the opportunity on Sunday night to mention this...
