Quesnel- Quesnel City council has sent a letter to Transport Canada and Nav Canada protesting the prospect of changes to the service levels at the Quesnel airport.

Nav Canada has issued a discussion paper on air traffic service levels which includes Quesnel.

Nav Canada is contemplating removing the remote Aerodrome Advisor Service, and replacing it with an air traffic frequency.

Council says they are adamant that service levels at the airport be not reduced.

So, what does this mean to the lay person that does not work in air traffic services?

Instead of having a human there that would assist pilots with weather information, turning on runway lights, etc. it would all be done remotely via the airplane radio or telephone. Basically a lost of jobs locally and less security, reliability, safety and confidence level in the Quesnel airport.
Much like the automating of lighthouses by Transport Canada.
That should not have happened either, but in many places on the coast it has.
I remember well traveling up and down the coast years ago,and the feeling of security it gave when you passed a light, particularly on the very lonely north coast.
Just knowing that there was somebody else out there made you somehow feel a bit safer.
Automation isn't always the best way to go,and it's too bad everything always has to come down to money.
Would it made any difference to the Queen of the North?
When lunarguy said:

.....lunarguy is probably not a pilot.

Aircraft landing in Quesnel have turned lights on via radio transmisions for years. The Flight Service station in Quesnel also closed years ago. Weather information for Quesnel has also been automated for years. Aircraft have communicated via radio, located in Quesnel, with humans who are located in various distant locations, also for many years.

I doubt if it is possible to clear a runway of snow by remote means... Neither agency listed in the report provides that service.
