Prince George, B.C. – While there have been 15 deaths in B.C. avalanches so far this winter, there have been far more cases where people are being dug out and survive. That’s the word from an avid snowmobiler, Lee Sexsmith of Prince George.
He has been reading a lot of reports where people have been caught in avalanches in recent weeks, and have been dug out without a loss of life.
Sexsmith says the people are talking about it on the blogs of snowmobile clubs but the incidents haven’t been reported.
Sexsmith says the writers are simply sharing the information about where the slide took place.

As with anything, there is more that happens in our big world than we ever hear about.
You sledders be careful out there.
Layman's quote:
"If the snowfield is the size of your living room and as steep as your staircase--be VERY cautious!! There is an ugly layer buried at the bottom of the snowpack, and will remain prominent for the 2009 season--BE SAFE!!
There is no requirement to report such avalanches. Those involved obviously know about them. It is others who don't. It would help if they did.

The same goes for many such incidents in other types of work and play.

There are also more birds striking airplanes than we know about.

Reporting and recording near misses is one of the "tools" used to improve the understanding of such incidents and developing tactics to reduce such incidents.
