Sustainable Housing Strategy Forges Ahead

Prince George, B.C. - The City of Prince George is moving forward with plans for a sustainable housing strategy.
A steering committee on homelessness in Prince George is set to get to work after council members approved its terms of reference. The Beyond Homelessness Steering Committee is made up of City Council members, administration, and community members.
Chair Murry Krause says the plan is to incorporate the Housing First strategy in Prince George, based partly on the successful program in Portland, Oregon. Krause says it's crucial to get people stable shelter and provide the necessary supports for success.
"How can you get somebody healthy? How can you stabilize them if they don't have a stable place to live? So the goal is to get people into that housing, get them into shelters if that's where they need to be. Move them into supportive housing when they're ready. Make sure those supports are in place, so the person can indeed be successful."
Krause points to the provincial purchase of the Astoria Hotel for social housing as proof that other levels of government know the city is serious about addressing the issue.
