Prince George, B.C. - The Northern Cancer Control Strategy Liaison Committee had its inaugural meeting in Prince George today.  The liaison committee met to discuss the progress of the BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North, a major component of the Northern Cancer Control Strategy (NCCS).

The Liaison Committee was formed to make sure elected officials have a chance to meet regularly to receive updates on the status of the Cancer Centre and to discuss challenges and opportunities.

Members of the committee include:

*        Shirley Bond, MLA, PG/Mount Robson (Chair)
*        John Rustad, MLA PG/Omineca
*        Pat Bell, MLA Prince George North
*        Dan Rogers, Mayor, City of Prince George
*        Stephanie Killam, Fraser-Fort George Regional Hospital District
*        Dr. Charles Jago, Chair, NH Board

Members of the BC Cancer Agency, Provincial Health Services Authority, Northern Health, and the Ministry of Health Services will provide administrative support to the committee.

The 5,500-square-metre cancer centre will be located on the Prince George Regional Hospital site. The Centre will include two linear accelerators used in the delivery of radiation therapy treatment in the north.  Dr. Charles Jago, Northern Health Board chair, says he looks forward to meeting with the committee members to help guide the development of the cancer centre in Prince George.

"It is an opportunity to ensure we are building a solid network of cancer control across the region, in order to improve access to cancer care, prevention and diagnostic services for northern BC residents."

Construction on the BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North is expected to start later this year with completion of the public-private partnership slated for 2012.

After all is said and done in planning the building, I sure hope they consider valet parking. The current parking at the present hospital site is 99% atrocious. For want of a better term of reference. How about it? Maybe our own Skytrain station along 15th and a stop in front of the hospital?
bus # 15 makes regular stops at the hospital (as well as # 1 and 11). Thats pretty good service for our city this size.
Do I smell an election in the near future?
