Prince George, B.C. - UNBC Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Management professor Patrick Maher and his students are participating in the Students on Ice Expedition to Antarctica from February 12-28.

“Although the primary focus of the expedition will be to expose students to the geography and biology of Antarctica, there will be special emphasis on the ways global warming may be affecting the continent,” says Maher. “UNBC is one of only three Canadian universities participating in this incredible opportunity, which coincides with the International Polar Year. In total, there will be 71 students from Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia participating. They’ll be taught by some of the world’s leading polar scientists.”

Lectures and hands-on workshops will cover a variety of topics:
  • Geological, political, and cultural history of the region
  • Environmental issues facing the polar area
  • Ice and glaciology
  • Wildlife identification and observation
The expedition will depart from southern Argentina on February 16 aboard a former U.S. polar research vessel and cross the Drake Passage. The students will take frequent trips to the Antarctic mainland to gain first-hand experience of the unique geography and wildlife of the area. They will visit key historic and scientific sites, including the site of the famous Shackleton Expedition, Deception Island Volcanic Crater, and international scientific bases.

You can  visit  the expedition’s website at www.uantartica.org , where you can chart the voyage’s progress through updates and journal entries from the students, educators, and expedition leaders. Digital photos will be uploaded daily to the site.

I see there was a lot of importance placed on the fact the new top cop in PG was a woman, so I was just wondering if there will be any male students going to Antarctica? Any reason why male students are under represented on these trips?

Sounds like a fun trip though.
Yama, you know what happens to the male appendage when it gets cold, don't you?

That's why there is less participation from males on these cold climate trips...
Say professor Patrick Maher here is some some news for you. Global warming flatlined in 98 and global average temperatures have been decreasing since 03. I guess that fact you will dispute so you can stay on your taxpayer paid junket. Don't forget your beach towel.
I thought the new catch phrase was "climate change", now that "global warming" has been proven wrong. I wonder what crap Gore and Suzuki will come up next to make another million off the stupid people that listen to them.
A prof and students going to conf/exhibit is a piece of news. But any news on the important election of new president in UNBC? Who are short listed/invited for interview? Is the salary of the new president capped to around 200,000 CND like in other teaching universities or we should expect half a million Dollar salaries again?

Did I miss the news on this board that Dr Deborah Poff, VP academic [until 2004] in UNBC is heading to another university - "not in Antarctica" - to become president in August. How much is her salary there? Did she applied for the UNBC president position too?

Who is going to replace her in the UNBC faculty association "FA" as grievance officer? I would like to read about her performance and the FA annual report on the no of grievances and discrimination cases filed, resolved or pending during her tenure and the tenure of the new VP provost Dr Mark Dale. Perhaps UNBC FA can publish its reports for the public on its webpage and we see an update on these issues in Opinion250.
Antarctica? Wow! I was born too soon. Back in 1962 we went to a movie theatre on a city bus with our English teacher to watch the movie McBeth. Pre TV video recorder time then. The other field trip was to the Vancouver Symphony. Bye the way, how many packages of chocolate are the kiddies gonna have to sell outside the doors of Tims and the Stupidstore to pay for this jaunt?
