No Dollars Means No Events for DBIA

Prince George, B.C. – Some of the things that have become synonymous with Prince George may be missing this year.
The Downtown Business Association failed in its bid to expand its boundaries. With that failure came the end of the bylaw which had established a tax levy for those properties within the old boundary. No bylaw, no tax collection on downtown properties, no money for the DBIA’s previously sponsored events.
Acting DBIA President Kirk Gable says the office will be maintained, but the old DBIA will not be spending any other money this year. “We just don’t have the money” says Gable “There just wasn’t enough time to put together a new plan and a new bylaw to have it ready for the tax notices this year. We are hoping to move forward for 2010 though.”
That means no flower baskets downtown, no contribution to the Northern Lights winter lights festival, and no Father’s Day Show ’n Shine.
The annual Father’s Day car show had become a huge crowd draw to the downtown with organizers saying some 20 thousand people had visited the event last June. The car club behind the event, the Cruisin’ Classics, is actively trying to find an alternate site.
Gable says opponents to the expansion indicated the events had, in the past, been managed by volunteers so he’s waiting to see who will step forward to make these events happen again.
“Right now we are waiting for the Annual General Meeting” says Gable “I’m hoping that will create a momentum to move forward with a new expansion initiative that will look at all the issues like where the boundary should be, how much the levy should be and the development of a detailed business plan.” That AGM is set for the 24th at the Ramada Hotel.
While both sides on the expansion issue had agreed they would hold talks, Gable says at this point, no such talks have taken place nor are any scheduled.

The dtba is making a big mistake if it lets shows like the show and shine and other events go to other venues.... I am sure with all the businesses downtown they can find some volunteers... if not why should the rest of the community fund the venture.?
These events have always been here without the expansion of the boundary. It was voted down so no change. Where did the money go???
The show n shine will continue I think. Just be in a different location. I wasn't really at ease leaving anything sitting unattended, chairs, jackets etc. due to all the street critters roamin around that call that part of town their home.
IMO More of a little temper snit...they didn't get their way so now "they have the bat and are taking it home..thus no ball game."
Wow! all this crap happened in less than six months, amazing!
Let the downtown die. Stop trying to save downtown, the sooner it goes, the sooner it comes back. Stop hanging on to the old visions of downtown, its never going to be that way again. In another 6 years, we are going to be a 100 years old. Let our city, literally rise up from its ashes and be a city of the future. From Vancouver Street to Queensway, 2nd Avenue to 6th Avenue, this should all be nothing less than a two storey modern office, retail and residential development.

Reduce night club licences to one area of town. Between Queensway and Ontario, 2nd and 4th. This way it will be a lot easier to manage.

rumor has it that the PG Hotel has been bought by the city. This does not leave us with too many more establishments. The Generator and the Rum Jungle. The Cadillac will likely loose its liscence with its recent development. The Astoria is becoming a homeless home. This leaves the old Iron horse and Jordy's. The Croft will likely be bought out by the city.

I believe that Prince George does need a clubbing area. Lets offset away from the area we are trying to redevelop.

Then we deal with the Pawn shops. Set them out of the downtown area. This could be done easily by, the police. If you get caught selling stolen goods, your liscence gets pulled. If you want to set up a pawn shop your going to do it in a certain area of town only. Then limit the pawn shops to the population. Set it up for no more than 1 for every 20,000 people. this way the value of the liscence is valued, thus questionable items will not be purchased from questionable people.

Move the Pawn shop out of the core, and we will likely see a shift in the demographic. (PC). The needle exchange area and other social needs projects also needs a place. Make it between 1st and 2nd between Ontario, and George. Some would say that concentrating demographics will create bigger problems..... Would it? If we are truly going to make it work, wouldn't it be easier if we can concentrate our efforts into a couple of blocks instead of spreading it out over 60 blocks. The policing efforts, and social efforts can be more effective if it is managed in smaller area. But it needs a leader to do this.

To He speaks.
You should have run for city council, your idea is the best solution of all we have heard. Keep them all in one area way down there. To bad there is no one in the city to do it or have the guts to change from what they are doing now, they just talk alot and accomplish nothing. Was going to say talk is cheap, but not the case of the city, everytime they open their mouths it costs us more.
We need a fenced-in area. Paint all the buildings yellow and put up mega bright lights to light every nook and cranny.

Then let us see where the action will move to. ... and do the same where they move to .... and then the same where the action moves to after that.

Sort of like getting rid of people less than 5'4" tall. They tend to end up somewhere else. They just do not go away no matter how much you pray.
I also think He Speaks is on the right track.
And I also like the idea of starting at Victoria with a line of D9 cats and not stopping until they get to the river!
Then start over...as they should have done years ago!
I read a letter to the editor in the Citizen this morning concerning a recent incident at the Cadillac Ranch nightclub. It was signed by the Cadillac Ranch. I didn't think a inanimate structure could write a letter. No name attached. I guess the no name thing says a lot.
Put the needle exchange just inside the front door of the new police station. 2nd door on the right. With a big frigging camera (with film in it) on the wall across from the door. When pigs fly I guess.
So, the DBA tried to pull a quickie with the exspansion of their tax base and got caught at it. Now they don't want to play anymore. Good bye. I'm sure the car show will carry on somewhere else. The Northern lights festival should stand on it's own or fold.
I feel sorry for the Down Town Business owners. I think the Downtown is being destroyed by all the government funded social housing , needle exchange , coffee house, and another new haven for street people and the Homeless that the Metis Community have set up behind the Keg. What about Zoneing ?? The grand opening was today. I wonder who owned the nice new Buick Enclave parked out frount?? Take a walk down George St.
Buick Enclave? Before the bullet holes? Ha ha ha. Coulda been a wealthy benefactor. We will see.
I like the idea of putting the needle exchange beside the new fuzz palace, good one Harbinger! If the governments insist upon concentrating all the social agencies for street people in the downtown, how about offering to buy out all the businesses that suffer as a consequence of those arbitrary decisions?
What options were downtown property owners offered when considering where to locate a needle and crack pipe exchange? or the asap shelter? or the friendship lodge? or all the various arms of the indian friendship centre industry?
