Tender Documents Prepped for Demolition Contract

Prince George, B.C. – It won’t be long before demolition work starts on the former Good Time Bingo building at the corner of 4th and Victoria.
The site will be cleared to make way for the construction of a new RCMP headquarters. 
Final tender documents are being drawn up now for the demolition and salvage job. It is hoped many of the fir beams in the building can be salvaged and recycled for use in the new building.
“We hope to start demolition within a month or so, although you like likely won’t see much as there is a lot of work to be done inside before the walls actually come down” says Greg Andersen with the City’s Civic facilities department.
It is hoped the demolition can be complete by the end of April, or early May so construction can get underway as soon as possible.
The new facility will be two storeys above ground and was budgeted to be in the $25 million dollar range, although the final estimate for the construction of the facility is not known.

Maybe the new building will only cost $20 million...

Could be done if the architect was reined in and not allowed to "express" himself. The fee is a percentage of the cost of the building, so the more expensive, the bigger the fee.
What ya mean a two storey building. What kind of crap is that. The previous rendering of the project showed about 5 storeys.

Something is kind of fishy here.
The original design called for three storeys, but that depended on North District occupying one floor and paying the rent for it.

Unable to reach an agreement with North District on that idea, the design was scaled back to two storeys.

It is a shame, We are going to spend all this money, and get a box, with no architectural ummph to downtown.

I know it may sound stupid, but build the extra two floors, Even if it is only a shell. It will never be built cheaper than during a recession.

The upper levels will always be offices and paper sufflers anyway. So rent it out to the private businesses until the need to expand the office space is recognized. This way, it will be cheaper on a fifty year plan. Sure hate to be looking at another building in 20 years.
Yep, we will go in to deeper debt on the project. But at least it will have a chance to create revenues. It is a gamble, but it will be worth the risk. Eventually, lets face it. The police or the city will use the space anyway.

The province believes that PG will be one of the driving forces of the economy for the province for the next few decades. This means more people moving in, after this bit of a economic meltdown. We might as well be prepared and start thinking like leaders instead of followers. it is easy to be a naysayer. Naysayers never do anything but try to find a raincloud.

I would love to believe that! Where on earth did you get this information from? What are all these people going to be doing exactly?
Naysayers? More like realists. And I agree with hespeaks, since they are going ahead with this monument to excess anyway, build the G.D. thing oversize now!
Remember the last go around on Brunswick St, it was called planning for the future. "The structure is designed for 'X' more floors? Now the powers that be don't feel that the original location is good enough for them, after all, just look at the palace that North district got up on 5th avenue (with the half million dollar members only shooting range so jealously guarded) Since we have to go in the hole for the new cop shop anyway, build more than they need right now. Of course that sounds so much like common sense, it won't happen, too radical an idea.

I agree. If we're going to build it, we may as well build it to accomodate our needs over a 15, 20 or even 40 year plan. Do it right the first time. That would be a radical notion for PG though, LOL.

Many of the posters on here won't even be alive 20 years from now, however, I will be and since I'll have to keep looking at the darn thing (and keep paying for it) I'd prefer to see it add some value to the downtown core instead of having some scaled down piece of junk like most every other 70's style building we see down there.
