Prince George B.C. – The City of Prince George will not be twinning with a community in China.
The City had received a $50 thousand dollar grant from the Province to produce a memorandum of agreement with a city. That was supposed to be complete by the end of March.
The report put to Council suggested that Prince George enter such an agreement with Jiangmen, China.
“This is not a priority for me” said Mayor Dan Rogers, “I have some concerns about the long term funding for this.”
The grant from the Province would provide $50 thousand for the first year which expected a travel exchange for delegations, then the City would be on the hook for about $25 thousand dollars a year to keep this relationship going.
Councilor Shari Green wanted to go ahead with the twinning “I know people at home are saying ‘ here we go, another trip to China’, but the Province is paying the bill, so that’s kind of nice.” She later added that building relationships now would be a precursor to planning for the time when the global economy recovers.
Mayor Rogers commented that “Just because we get tax dollars from another level of government doesn’t mean we have to use it, and in the end, there is only one tax payer.”
Councilor Dave Wilbur said during these challenging financial times, Council must “demonstrate frugality”
Councilor Brian Skakun commented the City would be better off spending $25 thousand a year supporting Prince George’s multi cultural community.
The twinning plan was defeated by a vote of 4-3 with Mayor Rogers, Councilors, Wilbur, Skakun and Stolz voting against the twinning, while Councilors Green Bassermann and Munoz voted in favour.
The question now is about returning to the Province the $50 thousand dollar grant.
The whole matter has now been passed over to Administration to come up with some options based on the decision on Council to NOT twin.
