Prince George, B.C. - BC’s Finance Minister Colin Hansen, says he is continuing to press the Federal government to extend EI benefits to forest workers who have been hit hard by layoffs as a result of the world wide economic recession.
Hansen, speaking on the Meisner program on CFIS FM and through live streaming audio on Opinion250.com, said that while the extra five weeks is a start towards assisting those forestry workers, it does not go far enough.
“There is enough money in the EI coffers to provide that extra year of benefits” says Hansen “it could be another year before we are able to get forestry going again in BC and they definitely need help.”
Hansen said while the Province is putting money into communities like Ft St James, and Mackenzie, there still is a need to do more. “Mining has slowed down, the Alberta and BC oil patch have seen curtailments and so there are no ready jobs available for unemployed Forestry workers from these communities to go to.”
The Minister also said there is some wriggle room left in the provincial budget, “We are heading down uncharted waters, and if we need to step in, we have to be prepared to do that. We are being told that the turnaround will come in 2010 and BC will lead the country out of the recession.”
