Prince George, B.C. - The Olympic Torch Celebrations will burn up a lot of cash for the City of Prince George. The City has had to add to it’s budget $50 thousand dollars for the celebrations.
That money would cover everything from planning and promotions, to entertainment and security, plus a $5,000 contingency.
Although there is a possibility some of the money will be provided through a grant from the Provincial or Federal government, there has been no word on such funding, so Council wants to prepare for it now.
The addition of the expense won’t impact the tax levy. The money will be available through the major events reserves or incremental gaming funds.

Planning - is no one already on city staff that can do this?
Promotion - I understood it was the other way around, having the torch here promotes PG?
Entertainment - for who?
Security - why don't we ask the RCMP members to donate a couple hours?
If the flame goes out, use a Bick to relight it. Out of fuel? Get everyone to open their cell phone like they do at concerts and light up the parade. We'll be OK.
If this was $50,000 for Nov 11th, I'd be listening, but the Olympic is special for so few people, that all's required is to be polite and give them a smile, and Mr. Rogers can wave at them as my representative. That costs enough already.
