By 250 News

Thursday, February 26, 2009 03:54 AM

The City of Prince George is undertaking a conceptual design for a 3 metre wide paved trail to connect the Pinewood Subdivision with the University of Northern British Columbia, throughCranbrook Hill.

This connection is expected to benefit both recreational users and commuters to UNBC. The conceptual design is being co-funded by a grant through the Active Communities Grant Program. Although the construction of this trail is not yet scheduled in the City’s Capital Program, potential funding partnerships are being discussed.

You are invited to  prvide  some feedback on the design through  the City's web site.   You can also drop off comments at City Hall, or call in  your thoughts to 250-561-7000.   Comments will be accepted until the 20th of March.

What! somebody as spare change to fund things like this...wow
I think this would be the best park dollars spent in this city, so I think its great. I've often said a Connaught Hill type staircase from the bottom of Cranbrook Hill at the end of Massey up to the university should have been put in way back when the university was first built. All those apartments only a short distance from the university....

Cranbrook hill is the cities biggest crown jewel IMO bigger than the rivers and yet we don't have one single city park or park trail on the entire hill that circles half the bowl. The view points along that hill are fantastic (the ones not yet sold to private developers), and the valleys and in some places old growth trees are stuff very few places in the world could claim anything even remotely close to in a city of our size. Why we have never started a proper trail system up there makes no sense when it would be the cities biggest tourist draw and would be very good for the university when connecting to housing as well as for recreation,... and this kind of recreation is free to the user and therefore beneficial for everyone in the city.

I support more being done....
Given the road up to the University is basically one long pot hole for the past few years maybe the asphalt be removed and there is the new trail. Oh wait, they want to spend the money on a 3 metre wide paved trail, in that case, please pave the road ! I support the trails around PG and can see some value in them but when you have thousands of cars and numerous bicyclists on a daily basis going up that hill either to the University or to the other side of the city it would be more of a priority to have the road in good condition.
How about we get bikes off the road, onto a safe trail and commuters start getting priority in this air-quality advisory town?
I drive up that hill everyday and down everyday - it's not that fricken' bad! I support anything that will make PG a more desirable place w/ something positive to talk about instead of the bad air...which is PG...either gov't should do something about it and the city should stop funding stupid ass studies. Fix it or get off the pot I say! I'm sick of hearing about the bad air...I like talking about building cool trails instead!
How about we go up to the Hilton on the hill(jail) and grab a bunch of guys that are recieving free rent and 3 square meals a day and give them shovels ,picks and a wheel barrel, have them build the trail system
"...have them build the trail system."

That is *cruel and unusual punishment*!

:)-
Will this trail be kept clear during the winter? None of the other pathways between streets and subdivisions are cleared during the winter. A perfect example is the 800,000 dollar hole under hwy 16 into Carrie Jane Grey Park, not cleared during the winter. But since this trail will be serving the jewel on the hill, it will be kept clear.

Check out the pathways into our schools, ice covered very dangerous walking. Hey kid no rough sports at school, no bullying, no junk food, and buckle up in mom's speed wagon. So while being nice and safe, don't crack your head open on the icy school pathway.
Where in the hell do these ideas come form? The whole world economy is in the tank, and you idiots want to build a flippen trail, 3 metres wide? Paved yet? you have all lost your minds!

cobrasnake said it best, get the boys from the Hilton on the hill to build it, at no charge. Make them earn their damn keep.

It just never stops. Common sense went out the window, and drugs came in.

Have a nice day
Here is Dan Rogers legacy...all he has spoken about for years is the trail system.

Kinsley got us a bridge and rogers is gonna build a trail....it keeps getting better
the city union would never permit using alternate labour such as HoH (jail).
Not only that, but I would like to see the entire council walk the complete route. yeah right.
Finally, a note to city council, "STOP SPENDING MY MONEY!"
We do not need another over groomed or paved trail in the city.
If a trail were desired, then the walkers, hikers, and bikers would have trod one through the bush already.

"STOP SPENDING MY MONEY!"
Hey, a trail might be nice, why not? I like the idea, although I would never use it. BUT! why ten feet wide? (3M = 9.84') and why paved? That will be an open invitation for m/c and 4 wheelers won't it?
I say build a gravel trail, and build it with con labour, that's a good idea.
metalman.
Loki said it right on...

and the trails will have to be re-paved every 2 years like our roads

"and the trails will have to be re-paved every 2 years like our roads"

And will only get done every 20!

I think them being 10' wide and paved is very excessive. Why not a narrow trail that isn't paved - who wants pavement? I still support the trails though! Fredericton has 65km of trails in throughout that city - it's amazing but they aren't paved or 10' wide, but well used and like I say "there is no excuse to be fat in Fredericton".
Hey 6 months ago we were Booming , we were ready to bu.ild a 52 million arts center. So when did recession kick in, before 09 or after! This is a complex question . I am educated after all. This is for you MAYOR.
SPEND SPEND SPEND like the money is growing on all the bug killed trees. Maybe everyone who lost their jobs will donate a few dollars. THE ECONOMIC SITUATION is not over! STOP THE SPENDING ALREADY! I am so shocked that this is even a concideration at this time. Council members really need to get out more and talk to the TAX PAYERS! Oh wait we mean nothing and we would probably say what THEY DONT AND CANT HEAR!
