The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) is initiating the environmental assessment for the Phase 2 expansion of the Fairview Container Terminal with a 30-day public consultation process beginning in late March.

Phase 2 will quadruple the current design capacity from 500,000 to two million TEUs.

The expansion project is proceeding on schedule: all field and marine work in preparation for the environmental assessment process has been completed as well as an archeological impact assessment.

Construction is scheduled to begin late 2010/early 2011 with completion by early  2014. The PRPA and partners are continuing their due diligence and review of the business environment for the estimated $650 million project.

Thank you for spending the money to make it happen. Forward thinking people is what we need in the north.
by 2014, trade will be up and the port will probably need to expand again after that. Good to see positive news in the northern economy.
On small step for prince rupert, one giant leap for northern bc. Maybe....
"by 2014, trade will be up and the port will probably need to expand again"

Looks like we'll be importing 200,000 free trade workers per year from Mexico to run factories here at $10/hour wages so that we can compete with the Asian markets and start to sell them cheap goods.
200,000 people from Mexico? That will double the population of all of northern BC. Another good news for this fine area of Canada.
200,000 people from Mexico.... Great. We can then have real Mexican Reataurants.

I don't care where they come from, as long as they are working and contributing to the community and our society.

As long as they come here unconnected to the drug lords, and leave there politics behind, and come here to become Canadians. Then come on over.
Since phase 2 is in the planning stage I am happy to assume that phase 1 is operating successfully.

Great news!

Mexicans prefer the Okanagan where the winters are shorter and not as challenging as here.

They are sunshine people.
