Prince George, B.C. – West Fraser has announced further lumber production curtailments.

A total of 1,160 employees will be affected by these curtailments

he curtailments are in response to continuing extremely weak demand and are expected to pull about 44 million board feet of lumber off the market.

Ouch!

How are we going to afford separate native schools and all the usual goodies to keep us in the lifestyle we have are a custom to if this keeps up?

It is going to get worse....
Its going to be a long next year or so... the mill worker is going to be 1-2 week'd to the poor house by the end of this year.
Ugh! The hits just keep on coming!

I used to b a bit of an optimist but now I think this downturn might just get much worse here in the next while. I hope I am wrong!
Once the housing numbers come out, the true value of this recession will start coming to light. But none of these figures will come as a surprise to anyone, unless they're looking at this whole downturn through rose coloured glasses.

Who amongst us isn't holding off on buying a new vehicle, or has put on hold plans of selling a current house, and moving to something else? Or putting off some sort of major purchase? Or deciding it might be better to stay close to home this year, rather than some expensive resort?

So our own feelings about this are the barometer of the actual conditions, either locally, provincially, or worldwide, for that matter. And none of us feels to great about seeing what is happening.

I was one of the guys who has been saying that these curtailments are a good thing for the economy, as its the bitter pill that must be swallowed, in order for some health to be seen again, in our economy. But the people who draw a pay cheque from these industries are the ones who will feel the pain right away. I hope that most had made an effort salt away some dollars, to be able to deal with this, but my gut feel is that hasn't happened enough. So the effects of decreased spending will be felt in the community very quickly, and the stress of no job, no money, and dismal future will manifest itself soon, in the way it has in the past.

Even I didn't think it would get this bad this quickly. I thought a long slow downturn was in store. No a drop off the precipice. News from West Fraser is just the start - expect to see more in the next few days.
What about that new sub division council is talking about?
Don't they need lumber for ALL THESE NEW HOMES?

Did'nt Minister of Forests Bell, just come back from vacation in China and tell us all that he made a big sale over there for a bunch of our lumber,(four large size sawmills worth)Oh no, maybe he meant to say four years of raw logs.
I think he said "more beers, saw frogs!"
(must have been those Chinese opiates talking)
They made a deal for BC engineered trusses dirtcheap.
beesknees, I said before just what you are saying now. My husband is working 4 days a week, they work for 3 weeks and have 1 or 2 off. We had savings but with it going this way it does not take long before the savings are gone, when you have to pay a mortgage and feed your family, {and there are more just like us} trying just to survive and it is hard. Being on E.I. is not a bad thing, because if the mill shuts down for 2 weeks we still get some money, for 1 week we get nothing, the bank does not like that atleast he is working but with the help from the government. I call it survival. I was in the doctors office today and overheard one man say he has put applications everywhere and he has had not one interview, he was an older man and was looking very over whelmed and defeated. I felt sorry for him because probably about a year ago he was proud, but not now. That is what this economy is turning many people into. So for everyone who has a job I hope you can keep it.
Hey guys.....I'm not trying to be negatives when I say this but.......this is not a recession....it is a the dirty thirties all over again...in other words "a depression", look back in history to find out how you should prepare to survive this mess, it's coming very fast.
I watched the federal finance minister respond to a question about the recession that was posed to him, he responded by saying some thing like this, this is a very, very, very bad recession and it will get a lot worse. Makes a guy feel warm and fuzzy doesn't it?
One diffence now between the dirty 30's. The information age fueld by global trading. Dirty thirtees didnt have that.
Mr. Bell start telling the truth. Okay! You've sold our production jobs to China. Oh yeah, we'll farm the tree's so logs can be shipped to China. Nobody's gonna get it until we look at the lumber wrap. Product of Canada MADE IN CHINA. It looks to me like the Liberals have sold OUR resource. This province has gone to hell. No production workers = No taxes !!
Anyone who thinks this is like the 30's wasn't there.
