Prince George Number 4 In Crime Still Better Than Cougars
By Ben Meisner
We should take some satisfaction in knowing the City of Prince George is ranked #4 in the Canada as the most dangerous city.
At least we have a better standing than the Prince George Cougars. While the statistics taken from the year 2007 by McLean’s magazine are a bit old, it’s interesting to note that we still were higher in the rankings than the Cougars even in 2007.
The stats are just that , Saskatoon, a city known for its Arts Community came out on top of the heap, followed by Winnipeg, (who also I might add boast of a very good Arts community) followed by Regina , then PG and finally making up the top five Edmonton.
I don’t want to paint anything into the Arts picture, other than to point out that strong communities with a heavy Arts presence don’t necessarily escape the crime element.
There is a common thread in the stats that no one really wants to talk about and it is that each of the cities that make the top five has a heavy aboriginal-poverty component. They all sit as a catchment area for the residents of the north to escape the criticisms of their community.
With that kind of problem comes drugs, break and entries, violent robberies and a host of other crime fuelled by the needs that drug addiction bring. Small communities in the north cannot cope with the problems of many of their youth and are very happy to see them become a problem for their larger urban cousins.
It is no surprise to see what is happening given the location of each of the top five cities. Recognizing that it is a growing problem and doing something about it is another matter.
As for the 2008 statistics, given their current record the city of Prince George will still have no problem in beating out the Cougars.
I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

Victoria has 3%, it is #10.
Surrey has 2%. It is #9
The City of Vancouver has 1.9%. It is #8
Halifax has an aboriginal population of 1%. It is number 7 in crime.
Edmonton has 4.4%. it is #5
I think if we were to decide that the top 5 Cities on the list are the coldest in temperature of the to 10 cities, we would have a similar correlation as the native population. I am sure we could pick out several other things that they have in common.
Maybe it is cabin fever.
