Quesnel Seeks Grants
By 250 News
Quesnel- Quesnel Council has directed staff to submit an application to the Building Canada Grant program for the West Quesnel Land Stability Program. The application asks for approximately $11.9 million: $3.47 million for pumping and monitoring wells; $7.45 million for new storm drainage systems; and $1 million for a leak detection program. The City would be responsible, if the grant is successful, for providing one-third of the project’s total cost, or $3.98 million. A large, ancient landslide exists in the Uplands area of West Quesnel. To date, the City has invested more than $1.6 million towards finding a lasting solution to the problem. There are more than 750 homes plus an elementary school in the land stability study area, with more than 2,100 people calling the area home. Council originally had the North Cariboo Multi-Centre as its priority for the Building Canada fund. The Cariboo Regional District, however, decided to submit a grant application to an upcoming federal grant program called RInC for the Multi-Centre. As a result, the City was able to move the West Quesnel Land Stability project forward. Council added that the Multi-Centre remains a high priority for the region.
