Prince George, B.C.- With the Smart Growth on the Ground project, the Sustainable Community project, Beyond Homelessness efforts, development of a new Official Community Plan, you would think there wouldn’t be any room left for one more group working on improving the downtown of Prince George.
Wrong.
The City’s Task Force for a Better Downtown is well on its way to setting objectives and working groups to make sure the projects already on the go, don’t end up becoming dust gathering studies.
“This group will be the grease to the wheels to get some real action on the ground in downtown” says Mayor Dan Rogers.
The Mayor says the objective of this Task force is not to do the work again, but to make the work that’s underway see results.
To that end, the Task Force developed a number of objectives at its meeting on Thursday. Those objectives were set as statements about the downtown and are (in no particular order):
-
We are proud of our downtown day and night. It is a community focal point
-
We have a downtown where people don’t live on the streets
-
The downtown buildings and environs reflect common, positive standards
-
We have new, market and non market housing
-
We have new, significant amenities that attract people to experience the downtown
-
We have safe streets and places,
-
We have green spaces that are welcoming and connected to our parks, trails and rivers
-
We have well connected and coordinated organizations that are working together towards a common vision
-
We have infrastructure that attracts investment
-
We have leading edge 4 season design
As the list was being developed, one Task Force member’s frustration bubbled to the surface “We need to get to some real action” said Kirk Gable of Downtown Prince George. “We need to get moving” he added as he complained about creating more bureaucracy. Gable called for movement on real estate development, and a public commitment from City Council “We need Council to say it supports establishing a performing arts precinct over the next five years”.
Gable may be frustrated, but his suggestions may be putting the cart before the horse.
The Smart Growth on the Ground project is well on its way, and come May will present a concept for downtown, one Gable would like to see developed to the point of an aerial view of what the project envisions for downtown. He says such a plan could be used as a marketing tool to find investment for the projects. The Smart Growth on the Ground project in Squamish attracted investment as engineers and planners from other countries looked at the plan and wanted to see how that community would be able to adapt the ideas.
Meantime, Mayor Rogers is looking at making some changes, “Clearly we can make things better. In small steps, don’t look for the panacea, we can make it better than it is now by making some small steps, that’s what I’m eager to move forward.” To that end, Rogers says he is not going to wait for the final outcome of any plan to take some small steps, “Some short term action items to make it a lot safer in the downtown, make it the focal point for investment and make the environment much more friendly.”
The Mayor says the current financial challenges are something they need to be aware of, but that also presents an opportunity “Wouldn’t you look to invest where the infrastructure is already in place, where costs would be less the benefits would be higher? So I think it might strengthen the case that if you are going to invest in the community, the opportunities for a benefit in return with a small investment in the downtown are significant.”

Can we get the names of those on this anonymous Task Force? Another "in" group that has no transparency?
What OCP? That review was to have been done a couple of years ago.
Too many meetings; too many obvious, no brainer words; too little real action.
The focus is still on the edges of town not downtown. Boundary Road is where the money is going. Boundary Road is where the planning is going. The golf course is where the planning is going. Two plans inside of a year? No plans for downtown. Why? Can anyone figure this out? I sure can't.
