Ft Nelson BC -   Questions are being raised by local officials in Ft Nelson after 63 workers, 5 foremen were fired and 41 other workers attached to those  foremen left their jobs at the EnCana-Horn River Pipe line project near Ft Nelson.

The large exodus represented about one third of the entire work force at the camp and followed a sweep for  drugs.   The RCMP were not involved in the sweep of the camp and the matter only came to their attention after the fact when some of the dismissed workers complained to the RCMP about how they had been treated.

No charges have been laid as the drugs and alcohol were voluntarily turned over by employees to EnCana’s security personnel.

Those fired from the project had undertaken to work at a ‘Dry Camp’ and the massive firing took place after EnCana Security personnel, complete with dogs, made a sweep through the project. The pipe line project had been awarded to Mid West Willbros, from Nisku, Alberta.

EnCana had called in their security to search for drugs and alcohol after receiving reports that the workers had not been adhering to the dry camp policy.

The firings at the camp, located about 90 kilometres north east of Ft Nelson, forced the camp to shut down for several days until new employees could be brought into the area.

I guess drugs and alcohol still mean more to some people than a good job.
Here is where kevin1006 pops in and gives us a lecture why it should be legalized.

The "good job" isn't thought about as they, like anyone who breaks the rules, don't really think they are likely to get caught.
Having been out in camps all I have to say is that it is sometimes nice to have a little nip now and then. But to some people a little nip means rip snorting drunk or higher than a kite. The actions of a few ruin it for many. En cana enforced their policy that everyone in camp knew about. About time our lawmakers fallowed suit.
For all the time I spent in camps, any time that alcohol or drugs showed up, trouble followed.
When your in camp, who has time to party. It was always, get into camp, eat, shower, prepare for next day, go to bed cause 04:00 comes pretty early.
Not to mention that I do not want my life to depend on someone that is hung over and stayed up too late.
I say good! You know the rules going in, so no excuses. Besides, I bet most guys would rather not work alongside some spaced out cadet.
