Famous quotes: "We are proud of our downtown day and night. It is a community focal point"

Hello everyone, Happy Friday the 13th! I am looking forward to spring soon, and now with the higher temperatures maybe we'll see some weather closer to March is supposed to be.

I've read a little on the downtown improvement projects that city council are still mulling over, they seem to be talking an awful lot about it, but I have yet to see anything really done about it. I think revitalizing downtown is essential to PG moving ahead, apparently Kamloops has a wonderful downtown area that used to be in as poor shape as ours.

I wonder if it may be an idea to get an idea from the council of Kamloops to give some pointers on how to get it done? Or at least get it started?

I don't agree with the arts centre, as it will offer an opportunity for the "haves" to enjoy the art, the shows etc..sure it'll be a public place with a $50-100. entry fee. Most "have nots" can't afford it, or have more important things to spend their money on.

In any conversations they are having, "homeless" or "people living on the street" should not be in the same sentence as a "multi million dollar art centre". unless its to say we are helping the homeless by building homes and support programs INSTEAD of building the multi million dollar art centre.

Just a thought.

I would like to say congratulations to the Kersley Musical Theatre. With a cast and crew of 125 people, 13 amazing shows were held. The community of Kersley has proudly hosted this event for many years.
This years event Beauty and Beast was no exeception. All the shows were sold out. The community of Kersley has handled the event with flying colors. The influx of people for those two months was amazing. Parking was our biggest problem. This is because nobody wants to walk, or come prepeared to walk.
The community hall housed the crew with it's newly renovated additions($250.000). It was truly wonderful to see it put to good use.
Sometimes alittle disruptions has huge impact on communities. Kersley has always thrived on these little disruptions. Way to go KMT keep bringing them on.

Now that Canfor has been successful on the latest BC Hydro call for power and will be ramping up power production at their co-gen site there has been literally nothing said about the additional air pollution thst will be added to the Prince George airshed. This all seems to be flying under the radar and I guess we will only find out about it once the facilities output of both power and pollution has increased. The MOE will quietly rewrite the emission permit hoping no one will be the wiser. Deja Vu.
The wife & I just came back from the Eagles concert in Saskatoon - FANTASTIC.

While there, we drove around the city quite allot, and took note of the clearing of the side streets. Some the ruts on the streets we were on were eight inches deep. The residential streets, according to the B & B owner where we stayed, are rarely, if ever plowed.

We have nothing to complain about here in PG.
I did not know that the Eagles are back on tour. I wonder if they are headed west?

I don't think folks count thir blessing for what we do have here in PG.
I am so sick of people complaining about the cold and snow. Guess what? You live in the north. Why are people so surprised

I love Prince George!!!!!!!So there....
The eagles, they're still breathing?
Yesterday while traveling to work I had the pleasure of a YRB plow that decided to save some time and do both lanes at once... at 7:50am.. from the top of the hart to the scales... 40 kph with the entire morning commute backed up behind him.

Thanks pal.. you realy made everyones morning.
Just a reminder to those that don't give a crap about what they do when and how much noise you make doing it around your home and neighbourhood. That goes for your barking dogs as well.

There are people that work shiftwork in this town that are trying sleep when you are being inconsiderate.
Others only get certain days off and may enjoy staying in bed beyond 8am.

Perhaps get to know your neighbours and start to show some consideration to them instead of thinking only about yourselves for a change.

Have a good weekend and don't get hit by a bus today!
Are we really in an economic down turn? You would never know it by the high prices of meat in Save-on, the price spike in Walmart. Oh I'm sorry, I forgot when the going gets tough Big business raise prices. Whats with the child labour in save-on? Why am I paying 4 bucks for 8 hotdog buns then? Well I'm not even going to mention gas prices. Their prices are so high, so you can't escape PG.
Famous quotes: "We are proud of our downtown day and night. It is a community focal point"

Who said that?

Gus your just a voice in the wilderness. You brought up some good points on another site this morning; "Taking on the Task of Improving Downtown"

However people are not interested in our community its more about "self". "I had to follow this YRB plow blah blab blah".

Lets go back to the problem of downtown. There is no real plan. City Hall in the past has only considered development for tax purposes. They are now going off on a tangent to develope the air port logistics park. The infrostrucrute will further be stressed by spending millions on Boundary Road for a few more tax bucks.

We have subdivions planned for a population of 200,000 or more people and the economy is flat. And any resdential building thats place taking place have a getto mentality. There is a new development on Ferry avenue. The town homes built there look out onto a parking lot. There is not a square foot of space for grass or a shrub.

City Hall has this 'hick mentality" and untill that changes we will always be #4 when it comes to be the most dangerous city to live in when it comes to crime stats.

Cheers
It's Friday, payday, warm outside, and diesel is at .743 over at the BCR site Husky, whats not to be happy about?
Bullroar-er, would you be happier if YRB did not plough regularly? Its winter. Leave earlier, in case of delays due to winter. Boy there are some big and deep potholes, NO?

There has been 10's of millions of dollars spent on enviromental controls with millions ear marked for continued improvement. these pulp mills employ approx. 1000 people directly. Any added finacial burden jeopardizes this employment. Households with lost incomes because of closure due to non-competiveness will have far greater stress in their lives than a bad air day in PG. There is a small core core group that want to stir up crap that has little to do with air shed responsibility, this hinderance slows progress in air shed management. But I will tell you that the 1000 directly employed, and the 1000's indirectly employed will have a great say in what happens. People generally do not want others to screw with there family or employment, your statements cross the line in that respect. The power produced is green power the 3 mills in town produce more green power than any other source in the province. If you don't like it here move to MacKenzie I hear housing is very reasonable now.

There is no Pride of community in our City. The very first move by our new Mayor to fix the down town would be to fire the Planner. This boy is still in the 13 century when homes were mud hovels with thached rooves.

On James Drive in Pinewood the City had a piece of property for a playground, about two city lots. In an old established neighbourhod a developer bought the lots was allowed to build this castle that covers most of the two area. The neighours complained but the builder was allowed to proceed.

The development on #16 West was not only wrong and the developers only concern was for "parking space" Not a tree not a shrub or ablade of grass anywhere.

Someone recently mentioned Kamloops as a place with some imagination. All the new commercial development below Aberdene Mall has green boulavards, shrubs and trees.

Driving through the new sub divisions you see where we are building 5000 sq ft "coast climate homes" on 50 foot lots. The front lot is covered with double concrete driveways and a few feet of lawn and thats it. Only in Prince George. Oh well we are #4 an the crime charts.

Cheers

Ok the next time it snows phone YRB and maybee they will pull all trucks off the highway so YOU are not inconvenienced. How about leaving home a few minutes early in the winter to allow for inconveninces like this. If there was no plow trucks you would be bitching, and complaining how your commute was longer than normal. I guess no matter what is done people bitch.
Right on Firbink. Great post. Thank you. I am one of those 1000 employees that don't want to lose our job just because somebody doesn't like the smell. Too bad for them. If they don't like it, move! I did. I'm up in the Hart now. No smell up here and it's a great community. Like MoneKate said, seems like all some people want to do is bitch. It's either the roads or the smell. We live in the north, in an industrial town. Get used to it.
Can't argue with that mythoughts!
There is a small core core group that want to stir up crap that has little to do with air shed responsibility,

May be there are those that think its crap. Take the time, and read some of the medical reports that our Doctors have made on howm many people are dieing from the poor air quality in our City.

And what about the crap the pulpmills give us on how much money they have spent on air quality improvement. Why is it some days you take your life in your hands when you go outside and breath the foul air?

So many have been sucked in that work in the mills by the notion that if we spend more money on air quality improvement we will not have any profit for the rich.

Canfor recently had a profit of 460 million that they paid out to share holders. Maybe they could of used some of that maoney for better air quality.

Selling ones home and moving is not an option for many of us. Who wants to buy a home and live in Prince George with th poor air quality we have . But hey we are #4 on the best Crime city list in Canada. Wake up and smell the Coffee.

Cheers
Furbink & Mythoughts, great reality therapy! The air in the Hart is clean most of the time!

Only trees can't move, human beings can.
Hey Bridge if you don't like it here in PG WTF don't you just get the hell out?
I guess there will always be those willing to sacrifice their own health and the health of others, especially young children in regards to air pollution. Prince George does not have a healthy air shed and this can be verfied with the many public reports available. To increase the amount of unhealthy contaminents in the air without regard for the citizens of PG is just not acceptable any longer. The old saying "the smell of money" has run its course and corporations must be more responsible to the community at large in which they reside.
The best article I've read on the economy in the last few weeks....

How the economy was lost
By Paul Craig Roberts
Online Journal Contributing Writer

http://onlinejournal.com/artman/publish/article_4409.shtml

A must read for people that want a deeper understanding of where our economy is and where it is going....

While at Tims today I was reading about Bernie Madoff getting 150 years in jail. For some reason I thought that he will die within the next six or seven years. You heard it here first. Then he will become a piece of American history. Oh yeah, as they say, "Ya can't take it with ya." That's why you never see a U-haul behind a hearse.
Here is a website that one will not find in mainstream misinformation, sorry I mean mainstream media.

Lost faith, I'm a shift worker too, currently doing graveyards. One word of suggestion........earplugs. At the end of your shift, grab an extra set on your way out the door. I don't think you live on "Wusteria Lane". Don't expect your whole neighbourhood to plan their day around you.
Lostfaith. If you dont like the noise level in Prince George, or in your neibourhood, WTF dont you just get the hell out.
Such heartwarming happy thoughts and people here.
To be perfectly honest, I could care less about the smell. It comes and goes and it doesn't really cause any harm that I'm aware of. It's more of an inconvenience.

What does concern me is the fine particulate. It's a proven fact that these particulates do cause significant medical harm to humans. Having them spewed into our airshed would be no different that dumping toxins into our water supply. Come to think of it, we do dump flouride into our water . . . hmmm . . . anyway back to the air :)

The mills will eventually be forced to reduce their harmful emissions or they will be shut down. This fate will either be delivered by a future government or by a PG populous that is sick (literally?) of dealing with the bad air. The mills can't hide from this eventual fate and the pleas from mill workers won't be enough. It's hapenned to industries before, it will happen in PG and it will happen again in the future. We aren't unique or special. Cultures and priorities change and when things don't adapt to those cultures, they become extinct. That's they way she goes folks.
"mythoughts" go away, we don't need you. Your solution of moving to the Hart is not possible for a lot of people. Just go away.
Seamutt, here is one for you.

So Chrysler says if it can't have it's way with wage cuts and forgiveness of iot's back taxes it will shut down it's plants in Canada. Then they say that it is not a threat. If they do this I will never own another chrysler product and that's not a threat either. it's a fact. Nothing like being a good corporate citizen.
I for one disagree with lostfaith and think that the posts by Bridge are good posts, because they identify legitimate problems with the idea of finding better solutions. Thats what I like to read from other posters. People that just complain however....
I just read a fantastic article that explains the complainer bully... lol.
