Prince George, B.C.- Councilor Debora Munoz wants her council colleagues to support phasing out the use of bottled water at Civic Facilities. “I have been getting e-mails and calls from people saying we just took the junk food out of the schools and have added healthy choices to facilities so we shouldn’t get rid of bottled water. But we can move away from bottled water.” She says people can bring containers to the facilities and fill up on site.

Mayor Dan Rogers says the City is already ahead of the curve as it has moved towards healthier choices from contracted vendors.

Councilor Brian Skakun says we should be supporting people drink more water period and encourage them to move away from other, less healthy drinks. “People who have a bottle of water are in control of that bottle and it is more sanitary.” He says many facilities don’t have public fountains, and many people won’t take a drink at a public fountain.

Councilor Cameron Stolz says he would rather have bottled water for his children than pop, “It’s ludicrous that we are trying to set the standards of what people should have.”

Councilor Shari Green said she would not be able to support the motion “This resolution came initially from the City of Toronto which I suspect has different issues than we do.” She says there are other questions that need to be asked, like, “Do we have enough public fountains, do we make it easy for people to recycle?”

The Mayor says he is  surprised that we "Continually bring in bottles of water, it's a waste of money.  Why we are bringing in  bottled water when we have the best water in the world is beyond me.  One third of every bottle of water is oil through the development of plastics and the fuel to ship it here, it is totally insane in my mind."

The  item has been sent to the Resolutions Committee to see what action, if any should be taken

Face it Danny, you are going to have to hire an expert from away, we can't resolve this critical issue here at home.
metalman.
At least councilors Skakum, Stolz and Green make sense. Lets see banning water bottles, now that is just as stupid as stupid gets. It is about the plastic right, well Rogers and Munoz the genie is already out of the bottle,If you haven't noticed, last I looked almost all drinks are in plastic bottles. Cans are also plastic lined inside.

So if I go to a public facility I will not be allowed to have a cold drink of water, but I can have a pop, not that healthy, calories, plastic and think of the Co2 I am releasing, oh my. Juice, again sugar, calories and plastic.
I will be forced to get a drink of warm water out of a questionable unsanitary public water fountain if I can find one. Stupid as stupid gets.
The Mayor:"Why we are bringing in water when we have the best water in the world is beyond me."

He does NOT know that we have the BEST water in the WORLD.

Our city water is pretty good when it is pumped out of the ground, but by the time it reaches the tap it has been poisoned by the very controversial chemical known as fluoride and it has been so heavily chlorinated that it often stinks like hell when the faucet is turned on!

In most of the cities in Canada fluoridation has been discontinued long ago. Kitimat is a recent example where people were given a democratic vote about fluoride. They chose to stop fluoridation.

Ozonation has used in western European countries instead of chlorination for decades to kill water born bacteria because compounds of chlorine are very damaging to human health when exposed to a long period of time.

Prince George is lagging behind in many respects and this intentional completely avoidable chemical adulteration of our drinking water is just another example.

Sorry, Dan. Our city water doesn't make the grade.

Yeah, then who pays for the cost of this water. Are the participant willing to plug in a quarter to get filtered water?????
It is about the mind set. If people get used to taking their own water, they will do so every time. That will cut down on the plastic that is put in a land fill, and the water source will always be their own tap. Remember that at least one of the major bottled water suppliers was using London (England) tap water and selling it as premium water in bottles. Any drink brought from home in a reusable bottle stops another plastic bottle being discarded.

There is another alternative, but it is more costly in the long run, and that is to set up plastic recycling. That way the bottles can be reprocessed into something else. That would be better than at present dumping them in landfills. However, better not to have them in the first place.
.........sent back for more study.

The story of Dan Rogers political career is to defer motions for more study. Make a choice, council, and stand by it.

Dan, if you are concerned about the cost of the oil in the bottle and then the transportation charges, should you not be more concerned about the cost of special committees within City Hall. If this is all they (the committee) have to concern themselves with, then why is there such a committee?

Don't get too many slivers in your butt from sitting on that fence.
If people are silly enough to buy bottled water, let them. It keeps people employed "making" water. P.T. Barnum was correct.
Have you ever tried drinking at a public fountain? - Cigarette butts/spit/coffee left-overs/gum /paper wrappers etc. - how sanitary is that?
Bring your own water, only to be told "not allowed in" - so you sneak it in.
Seriously, can we not make arrangements with a social service agency to collect the recycling? There would be no cost to the city and I bet even if they put bags of bottles outside on the sidewalk in the morning they would be gone in minutes! Also water is a healthy choice and we are paying for the convenience. I would hate to have traveled all the way to the pool and have hungry and thirsty kids and have forgotten the water bottle at home... or my kids are having a snack and want an extra drink or any of the other numerous reasons people purchase bottled water. The water fountains are disgusting! Why is council wasting time discussing this issue?
Honestly? is this what the folks at city hall are waisting there time with? Lets get on with running the city and quit wasting time and energy on silly issues
There are studies that show that bottled water can be scary to say the least. Some of it is plain old water from someones well. Others are full of ewwwww. Just google it and find out for yourselves. Do you really want your children drinking something out of plastic? Not enough regulation for me to trust anything bottled in plastic. But to each their own and it is your choice.
I drink the water at the public library fountain all the time. Nothing wrong with it. I drink the water straight out of the tap at home too. I agree, the plastic bottles should be banned but why is council even looking at this. Can the city staff that we pay dearly for not make that decision? Why in the world does this have to go to council for approval? That's such a waste of time for them. They have more important issues to be concerned about.
This all comes down to choices. Each individual can choose to drink from a bottle, either reusable or factory filled: or one could simply drink from a public water source at the next opportunity.

The Toronto issue was about all the water bottles tossed into the waste bin. This still comes back to having adequate recycling programs and resources available which are non-existent in Prince George.
If Ms Munoz wants to direct her energies to a good cause, pick up the banner for a viable and affordable recycling program that works in conjunction with the waste removal program in use today.
How about a bottle exchange program? It works so well with needles.
We have a recycle program folks, take your bottles to the "bottle depot". Why are water bottles singled out? What about pop bottles and such, dont't they get thrown in the trash also. Lets ban all bottles and cans. This has got to be one of the more stupid issues going.
How about every liquid sold comes in a goatskin bag? Re-usable. Except fer the goat.
Seamutt has nailed it! Surprize! you CAN re-cycle your plastic water bottles, I guess. All I know is the bottle depot takes our plastic water bottles and gives us money in exchange (Mr. mayor, you could drop off a bag of plastic water bottles on the way home from 'work')
metalman.
First off, we can't start allowing any form of tyranny, first they ban bottled water then they'll want to ban something else and before we know it we'll be living in Nazi Germany. Speaking of Nazi's, they were the first ones to start using Fluoride in the water supply, of course not in their water but rather the water in concentration camps. It has been proven that Fluoride causes brain damage and that the only way it helps to prevent cavities is to put it directly on your teeth. As with tooth paste, tooth paste contains Fluoride and that makes sense, it also makes sense that tooth paste containing Fluoride has a warning to only use "pea-sized amount" and that "if swallowed call poison control". On the other hand bottled water is made from plastic, pvc plastic that contains chemicals that dissolve in water which has adverse affects on sexual development in growing children and teens. The answer is to purify your own water and put it in glass bottles.
