Northern Lights Festival a Possibility

Prince George City Council has approved in principle the concept of a Northern Lights Festival.

Patterned after other  light festivals in the country, this one would be  set up in Connaught Hill Park, and would feature static and animated displays for six weeks from early December to mid January.   The park would be open for viewing  five days a week from 6pm to 10 pm.

With thousands of lights,  the proposal  says it would draw people to our city and to the downtown.

The  outline for the  festival calls  for Council to consider funding for the event  when it has its 2006 budget deliberations.  The event  would need  about 65 thousand dollars in civic funding.

The balance of the nearly $165,000 dollar expenses (capital and operational) would come through sponsorship and admission fees.

Initiatives Prince George Gerry Offet is confident the festival committee can raise 6 or 7  sponsorships of $5,000 each.  He says it will be more difficult to convince B.C. Hydro that this would be an excellent opportunity to sponsor the Power Smart program.

It is hoped  that if  the City provides funding through next year's budget, the project could be  up and running in  November of next year.

Iv'e been waiting for sidewalks and proper roads since the promises of 1974. I guess my grandkids will be waiting for sidewalks and driving through the same puddles that I now do, after they inherit my house. Kinsley's street is nicely paved with curbs. He lives way out of the city core. I am 3 minutes from downtown. A light show is a priority?
