Prince George, B.C. - This Saturday night is set for Earth Hour 2009.   People all over the world are being encouraged to turn off their lights for one hour from 8:30 to 9:30 Saturday night to show there is support for efforts to reduce global warming.

The City of Prince George and the Regional District of Fraser Fort George have  made a comittment to take part in the event.  At City hall, the blue LED lights in the trees outside City hall will be turned off and  the City has promised to turn out lights wherever is safely possible.  The same goes for the Reginal District of Fraser Fort George.

There are more than 1850 communities  all over the world who have  promised to take part in  the event.

There is something a little different this year,  as Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF is urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol.

The World Wildlife Fund has  published some ideas on  how to  spend  Earth Hour and reduce  your carbon footprint:

  • Attend a local Earth Hour event or organise your own by throwing an Earth Hour street party with your neighbours
  • Gather family & friends for a look at the stars
  • Enjoy a family dinner by candlelight
  • Organise a treasure hunt in the dark
  • Take the dog for a night walk
  • Have a candle-lit bath
  • Sit in the dark and share stories
  • Organise a family night playing board games
  • Share a romantic night in with your loved one

Earth Hour Executive Director, Andy Ridley, is encouraging people to participate in whatever way they choose and to think beyond the hour “There are no hard and fast rules surrounding participation in Earth Hour. We only ask that you flick that switch and have fun doing whatever you choose to do during that time. Make Earth Hour work for you. Families with young children should feel free to turn their lights off earlier than 8:30pm and for those having too much fun in the dark during the hour, don’t feel you have to limit yourself to one hour and switch back on at 9:30pm.”

To find out more about Earth Hour, visit the official website www.earthhour.org , sign up and join millions of people in 80 countries throughout the world by turning off your lights for one hour at 8:30pm on Saturday 28 March.

yep might as well shut off the lights for our Cougars as well in the CN Center.

ha ha ha.
This is funny, the WWF is a real piece of work. How many people leave unnecessary lights on anyhow, costs money if you do. Do you feel good about changing your lights over to cfl's, you know the ones with the mercury in them.
- Have a street party, yep a good time in the north for a street party. By the way how did you heat that coffee you are carry to the party. Energy right.
-Look at the stars. Great but wear lots of warm clothes. Those clothes required energy to manufacture and transport, right.
- Dinner by candlelight. Did you use energy while you made that dinner? Did you have the lights on at the time? Energy
-Treasure hunt in the dark, now there is a safe family activity. Lets all run around in the dark, yep real safe.
-Take the dog for a night walk. Are the street lights on?
-Have a candle-lit bath. Now how did the water get heated.
-Sit in the dark and share stories. Don't forget to make some pop corn, energy.
-Organize a family night playing board games. Need lights don't ya.
-Share a romantic night in with your loved one. Now the only idea that makes sense.

Don't forget to send money to the WWF.

We are already very careful about leaving lights or anything else electrical on.
Most times, there is only one light on in the house, depending on the room we are sitting in.
We have already changed all our light bulbs to low voltage even though we are now told the new type are bad for us.
(I hate them,but I use them!)
We have installed a new high-efficiency gas furnace that was not cheap(jury still out on that one) and we no longer burn wood.
We drive the minimum we can and always use our cheapest vehicle on gas as much as we can.
We do our part, and I have no intention of sitting in the dark for an hour.
And besides, there may be a hockey game on and the T.V. draws more power than a light bulb anyway so what's the point?
I also need to see when my glass of scotch needs refilling!
Not going to happen.
baby making time....
This winter was too cold. I vote global warming. I'll let the diesel idle for earth hour just for spite.
Seamutt, just contemplating all those questions will require too much energy for me. We too (two?) only have the minimum number of lights on at any given time, including the 25 watt appliance bulb in the carport, and the 13 watt cfl night light.
metalman.
Will I save the world if I unplug my air freshener from the wall receptacle? But then again, if I use a scented candle and my house burns down....well, there's a carbon footprint, eh?
