Prince George, BC. – The Province will be handing over a cheque for a little more than $1.3 million to the City of Prince George for a share in traffic fine revenue.

The dollars are to be used to enhance policing and community-based public safety programs.

The traffic fine revenue sharing program assists municipalities that directly pay police enforcement costs. The grants come from ticket fines and court-imposed fines on violation tickets.

The amount of money a municipality receives is based on its contribution to total municipal policing costs.

While the province gave out $63 million in fine revenue, here is the breakdown of the dollars given to some 250 communities:

* Prince George - $1,360,445
* Dawson Creek - $217,407
* Fort St John - $312,547
* Kamloops - $1,239,209
* Mackenzie - $65,056
* Prince Rupert - $251,705
* Qualicum Beach - $56,771
* Quesnel - $228,585
* Smithers - $92,043
* Terrace - $223,942
* Williams Lake - $208,415

How about enhancing a roadway instead? Fill some more potholes! I think that could qualify as public safety oriented.
metalman.
All of that money should be going to roads.
I like the roads the way they are now. Those potholes do a good job of slowing people down, in effect enforcing the speed limits posted alongside the roads.

And no money has to be spent on installing speed bumps. That'll keep the tax rate down.

It's all beautiful.
Those aren't drunk drivers on Ospika. They're just dodging the potholes. Nasty one filled with water northbound around Ferry Ave. I mean nasty!!
The money should be spent on fixing the streets so that we can speed more, and next year we might get more money. Its not an expense to fix the streets, its an investment.
Is there any information on how these numbers correlate with fines collected? Is this like our income tax dollars?? $1000 out = $10 back to the community??

Another thought.....why not just raise our taxes and quit pestering us with fines, the savings in administration costs would be astronomical.
LOL Jim....THEY ARE raising our taxes to the tune of almost 9% and THEY ARE NOT going to stop handing out fines. THEY WILL continue to make millions from gambling and THEY WILL continue to raise taxes yearly. THEY HAVE for the last 8 years! It is a HABIT that THEY no longer can change.
Betcha the drug dealing gangsters didn't donate a nickel to this fund. Ain't life grand?
