Prince George City Council has had to deal with yet another shadow from the Hockey enforcers.
In approving a new bylaw for the Prince George Athletic Commission, there were lots of questions about what we call some of the events.
Councilor Cliff Dezel says "We don't know what the community will think is alright and acceptable, but we have to give the Commission the ability to deal with these kinds of events"
He and the rest of Council supported a wide definition of combative sports.
The bylaw updates the wording to allow for further development of combative sports.
They have also approved a new fee schedule for such events, that would incude the City getting a piece of the pay-per-view revenues.

There is no new bylaw yet. This thing has dragged on since February of 2005 when Council gave the direction to give the Athletic Commission a broader mandate. It came before City Council again in July as a result of the "hockey enforcers" fiasco at which time Council had to explicitly request staff to prepare a revised bylaw.
I was expecting a new bylaw. Instead, we got some proposed (sort of) wording to go into a new bylaw which is yet to be written.
I noticed that no one asked to bring the bylaw back in a timely fashion, so we may not actually see it come back till after budget time or something like that. That would make it a year or so for a simple change to a bylaw.
This is a good indicator of how long it takes to get things done at City Hall.
After all who cares what is written in the bylaw. The Commission will keep on doing what it has been doing all along, sanctioning events which the bylaw does not give them the authority to do.....
So what else is new?? Sayings such as "do as we say, not as we do" come to mind.
