Prince George, B.C.- The cost of garbage pick up will be going up .

The proposal put before Prince George City Council will see the following hikes effective July 1st:

Small  – Up $8.00 to  $118 a year
Medium – Up $13.28 to $152 per year
Large - Up $18 to $166 annually

The proposal would also see further increases, with another $13.50 for each container size next year, then  five dollars more in each of the years from 2011 through to and including 2013, but those increases have been put on hold until there is a  full review .

Councillor Shari Green  is concerned about such a large increase as she worries people will move to smaller garbage cans and dump the excess in less populated areas of the city.  That concern was echoed by Councilor Dave Wilbur.

Councilor Don Bassermann says while there is a risk of  some dumping, this service is heavily subsidized by the City and these increases are needed if the services is to pay for itself.  Councilor Debora Munoz  says she's not in favour of such an agressive fee increase if there is no full recycling program to along with it.

Without an increase this year, there will be a deficit of nearly $464 thousand dollars.
The reasons for the short fall are: increased tipping fees at the Foothills Landfill, administration collection service costs and overhead will increase by 3%.

Council  has  sent the matter over to Admininstration for some more information, that report is likely to come back to Council in the fall at  that time, further  increases will be discussed.

I thought the reason why we switched to this type of garbage pick up was to save lots of money. You really don't know what lies to believe anymore. They tell is crap we want to hear to get something they want. Can't those elected people in city hall realize people don't have money to spare. I'll bet they will talk about a pay raise for them because you have to pay well to get good people. How about NO TAX INCREASES, we have to live what we get, be a LEADER IN GOVERNEMT
Duhhhhhhh? Isnt Prince George on the Board of the Regional District. Isnt the Regional District just another level of Government.

So the City puts in a garbage system, and helps to pay for the landfill, and then increases the cost of garbage because the tipping fee at the Regional landfill went up.

To many levels of Government fighting over our tax dollars.

The reason the cost of garbage disposal has gone up is because of the inefficient operation of it, by the City and the Regional District.

Lets,. cut some jobs, and salaries, both for the Union and Management rather than continue to increase our costs.

We have to quit rewarding bad management, it is breaking our bank.
Well so much for Dan Roogers being any better than his Predecessor
With all those relentless increases it will soon cost just as much to subscribe to the smallest size as it did initially to have the largest one.

After everybody has learned how to climb daily into the smallest container (you'll need a step ladder!) in order to compress the garbage as much as possible the City will switch to twice a month pick up - keeping the same fee.

The garbage that did not fit in will require personalized special trips to the dump.

Smaller containers + bigger fees + less service. Triple whammy.

Perpetrated on a defenseless audience.
Isn't this also the same Mayor that promised a curb side recycling program? Good to see that is in the works.
recycle, recycle, recycle and pick up every second week.
"Lets,. cut some jobs, and salaries, both for the Union and Management rather than continue to increase our costs."

Heres an unpopluar question in a union town. Do we really need $20+/hour garbage men? How about $20+/hour landfill attendents? How many out there complain about costs but are pro-union? Cant have it both ways!
What a load of rubbish, it's time to do a spring cleaning at City Hall and get rid of the garbage. Even if it does cost us $8 more to dump them.
Born in BC, what is your job description and what are you paid per hour?
lostfaith:
I make over $20/hour, do not work for a union and never have, I have EARNED every wage increase and must perform consistently on a daily basis just to make sure I get to go to work tomorrow.
I put myself through school on my dime to get here.

Now your turn to answer what some would consider invasive questions.
Are you union?
Do you skate through your career making more money in a day than some do in a month?
Do you file a grievance because the supervisor asked you to do your job.
I thought our previous mayor stated that the new garbage system would save the city $250,000 per year???????? Apparently he was wrong - again.

Maybe the next step is to look at a more cost effective way of running this end of the business instead of just jacking up the cost.
Is it Loki or is it Born in BC? Interesting.

I am a certified HD Mechanic/welder/ Class one driver.
Earn $27.00 per hour and have done so in both union/nonunion places of employment.

I also respect anyone that works for a living whether it be union or nonunion.

I despise people that trash talk union employees because of their jealousy.
Especially when they do it while hiding behind the safety of their keyboards.
Invasive questions? ok what ever.
I didn't know that industrial jockeys could type?

Sorry, could not resist.
So, is it Loki or Born in BC?
Trash talk, was that a funny ?
Just wunderin'...I wish I would have used that one. Now, it would just be recycled.
I guess Loki is the same person as Born in BC.

Why would you need two identities here on 250?
So you can argue with yourself.
