Prince George, B.C.-  Staff at  Prince George City Hall have trimmed  nearly $600 thousand from the  General Operating Budget.

The cuts come in the wake of Council approving "plan B" which would result in an $834,455 thouand dollar short fall. At the time,  Council agreed that for one time only,  they would forgo paying interest  to the City's Enowment Reserve.  That alone would trim $500 thousand from the shortfall.

Staff  were left with the task of  finding the  rest of the savings in their budget.  They set out to cut $334,455 dollars,  but were able to trim $595,715.

Of that amount, $205,687 of the reduction came through revenue increases (user fees) and $390,028 was achieved through reducing  expenditures. The expenditure decreases come from discretionary spending (e.g. travel,conferences and vehicle allowances) and salaries primarily through the delayed filling of vacant positions, although three positions are being cut.

adding fees is not saving money.
it is shifting costs or off-loading onto tax payers.
totaly agree Loki. Who ever came up with that money saving idea and had the nerve to call it that should be canned.
Now that would be a cost saving idea!
I know of at least one place, funded by the city that is overstaffed, I am sure they could cut at least one of the three positions. But then what to do with that person...can they work anywhere else...Maybe even two of the three....But then again...who am I to tell the city what to do....
