Prince George, B.C. – The City will file two more applications to the Build Canada fund. While ranking 4 on 5 on the wish list, the Build Canada Fund wanted to know which item would be higher on the priority list. The favoured project is the library project. That would be done in phases with a total cost of $28 million dollars. Council is applying for funding for phase one.
Phase one was estimated in 2006 to cost $6.4M and would deal with several issues in the existing building:
• a new entrance;
• new internal public elevators;
• new washrooms;
• new exit stairs;
• a new circulation desk and circulation offices;
• new locations for technical service; and
• relocated administration, finance and marketing offices.
The City would be responsible for one third of the funding.
Phase two would cost $22.5 million and would meet the long term goals and more than double the size of the current library.
It is the second phase that has some Councilors concerned as the City is not prepared at this point to pay one third of that second phase bill.
Number five on the list is the dark fibre project . It would cost $2.2 million and the City’s one third component would be about $737 thousand dollars. The dark fibre project is viewed as a plus for the City as it will:
• assist local firms to grow their telecommunications capacity;
• enhance service opportunity for business in the professional, entertainment, and consumer service sectors; and
• allow private sector partner participation.
The top three items on the wish list (and applications have already been filed)
1. Boundary Road
2. 4th Avenue upgrades
3. Storm sewer rehabilitation
