Prince George, B.C. – The City will file two more applications to the Build Canada fund.   While ranking 4 on 5 on the wish list, the Build Canada Fund wanted to know which item would be higher on the priority list.  The favoured  project is the library project. That would be done in phases with a total cost of $28 million dollars. Council is applying for funding for phase one.

Phase one was estimated in 2006 to cost $6.4M and would deal with several issues in the existing building:
• a new entrance;
• new internal public elevators;
• new washrooms;
• new exit stairs;
• a new circulation desk and circulation offices;
• new locations for technical service; and
• relocated administration, finance and marketing offices.

The City would be responsible for one third of the funding.

Phase two would cost $22.5 million and would meet the long term goals and more than double the size of the current library.

It is the second phase that has some Councilors concerned as the City is not prepared at this point to pay one third of that second phase bill.

Number five on the list is the dark fibre project . It  would  cost $2.2 million and the City’s one third component would be about $737 thousand dollars. The dark fibre project is viewed as a plus for the City as it will:
• assist local firms to grow their telecommunications capacity;
• enhance service opportunity for business in the professional, entertainment, and consumer service sectors; and
• allow private sector partner participation.

The top three items on the wish list (and applications have already been filed)
1.    Boundary Road
2.    4th Avenue upgrades
3.    Storm sewer rehabilitation

How about the Build Canada Fund, build some decent roads in this town, so we can get to the existing library without having to have a 4X4. This is another item that should go into the pothole letter to City Council!! It just never stops, does it Danny Boy????
Not to sure if the city should be involved in something called the "dark fiber " project. Sounds like a make work project that would be more suited to Service Canada seeing as they are supposed to be in the bussness of providing jobs.
"The City will file two more applications to the Build Canada fund."

Should read...the city will file two more applications for more taxpayers dollars to be sent their way.
I suggest that they have the library upgrade their membership list, and redo the counting on the number of people who use this facility before they spend $28 Million to rehab it.

If this keeps up we can forget about anything being done with the roads, or any decreases in taxes.

Police Station 48 Million
Library 28 Million
Pac Centre 25/30 Million
Hiway 16/97 Connector 20 Million
River Road 6 Million
Cameron St Bridge Round About 2.5 Million.
Co-Generation Plant 18 Million?

Have I missed anything??? Are we all crazy in this town????

We need a Capital Project spending freeze for five year. In addition we should reduce the number of Council meetings each year. The less number of times Council meets, the more money we save.

All City Departments budgets should be decreased 10% across the board. No exceptions.

No more increase in taxes for the next 5 years. Live within your means, or downsize should be the order of the day.
