Indonesia workers assemble one of Winton Global’s pre-cut homes following its land and sea journey from Prince George.
Winton Global Homes of Prince George has supplied two homes to help the community of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, rebuild following last December’s tsunami. Ten wood-frame homes from BC have been shipped to Banda Aceh to help provide housing for residents displaced by last December’s tsunami.
Rosalind Coleman, head of the Canadian International Development office of the Canadian Embassy to Indonesia, this week led a delegation to tour a demonstration site on Sumatra where the homes are being assembled. Ms Coleman commended the Indonesian workers and B.C. construction supervisors on their contributions to the tsunami recovery efforts.
“Indonesia requires about 100,000 homes to replace those lost in last year’s tsunami,” said Forest Minister Rick Coleman. “B.C.’s pre-fabricated housing industry may be able to help with Indonesia’s need for earthquake-resistant homes that can be quickly built.”
The province is funding the demonstration project through Forestry Innovation Investment Ltd. Winton Global is one of four B.C. companies invited to provide wood-frame prototype homes for displaced residents. The 10 demonstration homes are located in the Eco Village of Labui, close to Banda Aceh, which is being developed by the Indonesian Ministry of Environment.
