Northern Health is calling for a new round of applications as its successful Aboriginal Health Initiatives Program (AHIP) enters its fifth year.
AHIP has funded over 185 community-based projects to address health needs among Aboriginal people. Of the $1.1 million available this year, $730,000 will fund addictions, mental health, and chronic disease initiatives across Northern BC… with the remaining funding supporting multi-year projects.
“Programs like AHIP assist Aboriginal communities in addressing short and long-term health needs,” said Northern Health CEO Malcolm Maxwell. “We look forward to receiving many applications that will contribute to building healthier communities.”
“The AHIP program is flexible enough for Aboriginal communities to develop projects that meet the community needs while still being culturally appropriate,” explained NH Executive Director of Aboriginal Health Lisa Tabobondung.
NH is calling for applications from all Northern BC First Nations communities. Aboriginal, Inuit, and Metis non-profit organizations mandated to provide health/social services are also eligible. An adjudication committee with Aboriginal representatives and NH staff will review the applications.
Since 2002, Northern Health has funded over $4.3 million in AHIP grants. These have promoted healthy lifestyles, provided information to recognize and manage chronic diseases, and offered clinics and education for dental health, diabetes, HIV/AIDS prevention, healthy eating, and youth activities
The deadline for applications is January 27th. You can call the Northern Health's Aboriginal Health Office at 250-565-2724 for more information and forms.
